BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, CMC – West Indies players Sulieman Benn, Ryan Hinds, and Patrick Browne finished the latest round of Division 1 matches strongly on Sunday.

None of the matches which were affected by rain on the opening day – the previous Saturday – ended with outright results.

At the beanpole Benn collected eight wickets for 43 runs from 23.2 overs, as Barbados Cricket League, replying to Spartan’s first innings total of 267 for seven declared, were dismissed for 159 at Blenheim-A. Following on, BCL held on for a draw, after drifting to 128 for five.

At Bank Hall, Hinds ended with seven for 66 from 33 overs for Empire, but Young Men’s Progressive Club captured the maximum batting points, and first innings points thanks to half-centuries from the uncapped pair of Kemar Smith and William Lashley, whose father is the former Barbados and West Indies batsman Peter Lashley. At Bayfield, Browne struck 132 to earn title-holders St. Catherine a no-decision with front-runners Carlton. Browne shared a third-wicket stand of 222 with fellow national player Kenroy Williams, who made 92, to help the home team reach 272 for nine, in response to Carlton’s first innings total of 350 for eight declared.

Combined Campuses & Colleges fast bowler Jamel Noel snared four for 52 from 10 overs, and former Young Barbados all-rounder Amal Nurse scalped three for 27 from six overs.

Out-of-favour national fast bowler Antonio Thomas took six for 34 from 17.3 overs, as Barbados Defence Force Sports Programme were dismissed for 228, replying to Pickwick’s first innings total of 246. Former Young Barbados spinner Gary Belle also returned Division 1 career-best figures of five for 11 from five overs, and former Barbados captain and West Indies left-arm medium-fast bowler Ian Bradshaw took three for 58 from 18 overs, as second-placed University of the West Indies capitulated for 145, in response to Wanderers’ first innings total of 156.

Former Young Barbados opener Kyle Corbin led the way with 43, West Indies captain Floyd Reifer was dismissed for a duck, but West Indies wicketkeeper/batsman Chadwick Walton hit the second highest score of 41, and CCC batsman Romel Currency of St. Vincent & the Grenadines made 21.

Wanderers then drifted to 89 for nine at the finish, after West Indies off-spinner Ryan Austin captured four for 33 from 13 overs, and Jamaica leg-spinner Gavin Wallace took three for 25 from 10 overs.
