Gafoor wins GASP Open

Moen Gafoor was crowned champion at the Guyana Association of Scrabble Players (GASP) Open tournament held Sunday afternoon at the Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) facility.

An intense day of competitive scrabble came to a close at around 1700hrs when Gafoor captured the win after six games and a spread of 933. In the first half he had already overpowered opponents to win three games with a spread of over 700.

The champion seemed pleased with his win which he added to recent competition wins including two GASP Open events and the CARICOM Day Scrabble Tournament.

Ulric Harris followed in second place winning four games for a positive spread of 364.
Grace Hercules of Linden finished third, winning four games with a spread of 147. She lost her first game to Julian Skeete but in the second game was able to beat Morris Munroe and make some headway on the scoreboard.

R. Michael (80), Leon Belony (66) and Julian Skeete (-142) won four games each, finishing in third, fourth and fifth place respectively.
Meanwhile the GASP will host an entry level Scrabble Competition on September 13.  The competition is open to persons who are not at present members of GASP.

GASP is aware that many people in Guyana play scrabble with their family and friends and would like to test their skills in an organised one-day competition.  In addition, students who had attended GASP’s Summer Scrabble Workshop over the past two months may want to test what they have learned at this competition. The competition will be held at the Georgetown Cricket Club and players are expected to arrive at 9:45 am. Scrabble boards and clocks will be provided by GASP.
