Rosignol United nipped past Sunburst Camptown 2-1 to bounce back into championship contention while the Georgetown side hopes were further dashed when the two teams met Sunday in the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Super League at the Blairmont ground, West Berbice.

A double strike by Rosignol nippy forward Gladnin Johnson  in the first half brought celebration to the Berbice spectators as the Camptown found the going tough against the marauding home side strikers.

Camptown, the 2009 Georgetown Premier League runner-up was on the receiving end from as early as the opening whistle when Johnson slipped passed a tardy defence and booted home a shot past Camptown’s goalkeeper Ritchie Richards in the 2nd minute of play.

The Rosignol side kept up the pressure as their opponent’s defence marshaled by Orlando Gilgeous seemed a bit disorganized and was rewarded once more in the 18th when Johnson found the back of the net.

Johnson and Jamal Watts continued their assault but by then Camptown regrouped and staved off the early onslaught.

The Camptown side who had a tough weekend following their 2-1 defeat against Premier League champions Alpha United Friday evening at Tucville ground fought back gamely with several timely runs spearheaded by national striker Nigel “Powers” Codrington whose  efforts were thwarted by excellent goal keeping by Rosignol custodian Joel Singh who brought off several spectacular saves and was quick off his line.

Camptown pulled one back two minutes before half time when Rosignol defence became over exuberant, giving away a goal when one of Camptown’s strikers was brought down in the box.

The experienced Rinshawn Sandiford made no mistake in powering home a well-timed shot to the right of Singh to score his team’s lone goal.

The second half saw both teams battling for the upper hand but it was Rosignol who squandered two golden scoring opportunities the first by second half substitute Rawle Scott who hit the ball wide with only Richards to beat.

Rosignol’s Travis Henry found himself in a similar situation but also missed out on the scoring chance.

Camptown also made a late burst but Telson Mckennon’s well-placed shot was tipped over the uprights by Singh.

Rosignol United have now secured three wins from five matches with two losses while Camptown slumped to their second defeat in the League from their five encounters.  They have secured one win and two draws.

In the other match of the double header, Georgetown Sub-Association scored a convincing 2-0 win over their Berbician counterparts in the Women’s Inter-Sub-Association League.

Alicia Williamson sent Georgetown into the lead in the 32nd minute as the visitors enjoyed a 1-0 lead at half time.

Georgetown sealed the issue when Collette Hope netted in the 69th minute.
