Wystan Robertson, Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Limited marketing Director yesterday lauded the Georgetown Football Association (GFA) and its premier league competition for its successes.

Robertson made the remarks at a simple ceremony yesterday at the sponsor head office where league winners Alpha United and other teams gathered to receive their prizes.

“We have been fortunate to have a partner in the GFA that has been responsible and put together a well-run organized league for the past three years and I think given the stigma football sometimes has, we need to applaud the work of the executives of the GFA,” he stated.

He also spoke of his affinity with the tournament declaring:”This is one of those competitions that I have close emotional ties with because it is among the first set of sporting events that I put together when I became Director of Marketing.

“We, at the company, decided that it was money well-spent since this is an area where we as a company, needed to do our part in development of football, development of youth and the development of the country.”

He noted that the players and teams had been outstanding and stated that the products of the league could compete with any other arena in the Caribbean given the successes that have come out of the tournament.

Robertson gave a commitment to GT&T’s continued support of the GFA run tournament.
“The Cellink Premier League will be around for years to come as the President (Colin Klass) said it has made an impression on football in Guyana and has also made an impression on persons.

“We at GT&T are proud of this so we will continue to put our money behind the Premier league as we expect a better league in 2010.” Yesterday, the Alpha United team was honoured for winning their third consecutive Georgetown Football Association (GFA) Cellink Plus Premier League title.

Shawn Bishop, who shared this year’s Highest Goalscorer Award with Pele’s Marvin Joseph, was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player (MVP).
Joseph and Bishop each accumulated 12 goals each.

Ronson Williams (Alpha) was named as the Best Goalkeeper while Fruta Conquerors club claimed the Most Disciplined Team award.
Alpha walked away $500,000 richer while Sunburst Camptown received $250,000 for placing second.

The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) and Fruta Conquerors teams,  who were third and fourth respectively last year, finished in the same positions and claimed $150,000 and $100,000 respectively. Pele and BK International Western Tigers finished fifth and sixth and will keep their Premier League status in 2010 while the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) and Flamingo FC who finished seventh and eighth have been relegated to the first division.

GFC and Flamingo will make way for Riddim Squad and Santos FC who were the two top finishers in this year’s recently concluded first division league.
