Carol Humphrey and Phillip Squires claimed the female and male Open singles titles when the Le Meridien Pegasus Hotel’s 40th anniversary Open lawn tennis tournament climaxed on Monday at the hotel’s courts.

In the women’s Open singles final which was blessed by good weather, the Berbician Humphrey, watched by a small crowd, outplayed young Shawna Gentle 6/1, 6/2.

In the men’s singles final, Squires won a tough battle against Ezra Sue-Ho winning 6/7 (7-0) 6/2, 6/2.
Sue-Ho came out playing strongly in the first set with a high percentage of forehand winners that stunned Squires.
But the consistent Squires showed his versatility and kept Sue Ho guessing where the next shot would be played to eventually prevail in three tough sets.

At the presentation ceremony, chairman and assistant secretary/treasurer Duane Lopes commended the sponsors  for continuing the sponsorship of the prestigious tournament and for including tennis as part of the 40th anniversary celebrations.

Deputy General Manager of the hotel, Susan Isaacs expressed her appreciation of the efforts that went into the smooth running of the tournament and indicated that the hotel would be making the tournament even bigger and better in the coming years.

In other results: Men’s 35 Singles – Andre Lopes defeated Rudy Grant; Men’s 45 Singles – Grant defeated Harry Panday; Men’s Doubles – Squires and Godfrey Lowden defeated Clinton and Wayne Alphonso; Mixed Doubles -  Sue-Ho and Gentle defeated Squires and Aruna Ramrattan.

Men’s 35 Doubles – Clinton and Wayne Alphonso defeated Don Singh and Omar Persaud; Men’s 45 Doubles – Clinton  and Wayne Alphonso defeated Maxie Fox and Steve Surujbally via the walkover route; Men’s 55 Doubles – Fox and Surujbally defeated Roy Rampersaud and Bobby Khan.

Boys 18 Singles – Jeremy Miller defeated Anthony Downes; Girls 18 Singles – Gentle defeated Aruna Ramrattan; Boys 14 Singles – Seanden David-Longe defeated Brian Ramsudh; Girls 14 Singles – Krystal Sukra defeated Tania Niamatali; Boys 12 Singles – Ramsudh defeated Asif Mohamed; Girls 12 Singles – Nicola Ramdyhan defeated Afruica Gentle.
