From  its staging of the National Closed Chess championships, the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) is now moving to stage a championships for schools.

The National Schools Chess Champio-nships is expected to  get underway this Saturday at the Carifesta Sports Complex on Carifesta Avenue beginning at 09:30 am.

The Swiss system tournament will last for eight rounds with teams consisting of four players and matches lasting for one and a half hours.

According to a release from the GCF, it has already dispatched invitation letters to various schools and those who have registered are St. Stanislaus College, Bishops’ High School, Bartica Secondary School, President’s College, Marian Academy, Diamond Secondary School, Mackenzie High School, West Demerara Secondary and Rosignol Secondary School.
According to the release, each team can enter two teams of four players each for the team event and two players for the individual category.

Interested schools are asked to register with Tournament Director Irshad Mohamad on 664-1650 by Friday.

The tournament is being sponsored exclusively by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport.
