Squires gets the better of old rival Leacock

The Guyana Lawn Tennis Association (GTTA) season-ending Banks Masters Invitational tournament got off to fine start on Friday with the top two men’s seeds in action at the Le Meridien Pegasus Hotel courts.

Top seed in the men’s Open category Philip Squires got the better of old rival and the division’s number four seed,  Leyland Leacock 6-3,6-3.
The men’s Open number two seed Ezra Sue Ho, a former national junior, champion maintained great composure to dispose of number three seed Anthony Downes 6-4 , 6-1 in their first head-to-head clash.

On the women’s side, experience prevailed over youth with the top seed Carol Humphrey defeating number four seed  Aruna Ramrattan 6-1,6-1 while number two seed Shelly Daly-Ramdyhan edged past national junior champion  and number three seed, Shawna Gentle 6-2,5-7,7-5.
The Banks Masters Invitational is being sponsored by Banks DIH Limited and will conclude next week-end.

The tournament which is being played under the ITF Rules and the GLTA Code of Conduct continues today.
The GLTA has selected the best tennis players in Guyana who have excelled in tournaments and other events over  the last two years and seeded them.
The categories being contested are girls 14 and under, boys 14 and under, girls 18  and under, boys 18 and under, ladies Open singles, men’s Open singles, men’s Open doubles and mixed doubles.
