Mahaicony river is known for rice farming and cattle ranching,if we will be getting a flood every year there is no possible way that we can make a living. The last flood I lost 75 heads of cattle and this flood I lost 50 heads how can we afford to live not to mention other life stock and rice.I am always two years ahead for my land tax.My advise to the drainage and irrigation department is to stop blocking the water from going through the low lying areas like abary creek where most of the savannah water use to drain through before.I can understand that the government is trying to develop the the standard of living in the area in building dams and drainage but without sound plan and advise for the people in the area the complete programme will be obsolete.Mahaicony river is a place that my parents made a wonderful living, sent me and my siblings to high school and college in guyana, canada and united states of america without bearing any financial burden and to watch their hard work and labour going under water is not fair for me nor for my siblings and for my parents most importantly. The releasing of water through the maduni is becomming a very common excuse to the government, let the people of georgetown and the greater georgetown area penalized for dumping garbage in the drainage system.

Rain, rain and yes, there is more rain on the way. I feel terrible for those poor residents who have to contend with this day after day. But what is the beloved government doing about drainage? Is there any money left from the billions they get from the US each year? if so, why not use some on drainage? This is the only backward country where this crap can go on year after year --- the ministers talk and talk and talk some more but they SAY NOTHING and that is such a shame. I see a whole lot of people especially children getting sick as a result of this; and as for the beef, I certainly would not buy any. A slaughterd cow is one thing (where beef comes from) but when a cow dies after being sick for weeks with heaven knows what, then ends up on your plate, watch out. WHAT IF ANYTHING IS THE GOVERNMENT (the people these same people voted for) doing about this?

While it's a fact, that the weather patterns are changing,I wish to ask you the following. Perhaps you can enlighten me.

(1)Was there ever a National inquiry into these floods since they started in 2005?

(2)What were the findings of the commission?

(3)Did an international team of engineers visit Guyana after the inquiry? What were their findings and recommendations?

(4)If not,What studies have you conducted into this flooding and what were the basis for recommendations.

Guyana depends heavily on the cultivation of rice and sugar for foreign exchange, should they abandon the cost where will they cultivate these crops?

Moderator, I can observe the " TRUTH ' hurts that is why you did not post the other blog that I wrote. Don't they have freedom of speech in Guyana ? Well, well we have that here and I am sooooooooo happy about that because we can say what we want about the president here and it is no sweat. So you need to chill out and let us be free in responding to the articles we read.

You people are ridiculous. Guyana will always have flood. It'll need plenty of $ to fix this issue. PNC would've done worst!

What does the government has to do with the weather/flood? Wasn't there flood in Guyana when PNC was in office? From what I remember back then, Guyana was all Mud. Do you really think Guyana have enough money to fix every issue its facing. Guyana is in a path of development and will take decades before everything is fix.

An inch of rain is not always equivalent to 12" of snow. The amount of snow from 1" of rain depends on atmospheric conditions. Temperature, humidity and other atmospheric factors determines the crystallization and water saturation of snow flakes. Higher temp. will create snow flakes containing more water while resulting in less flakes from 1" of rain.
An inch of rain will only be equivalent to 4-5 inches of snow when the temperature is around 32F or slightly higher. This is wet snow as some know it; temp. is not cold enough for flakes to fully crystallize.
When its well below 32F(freezing point) you can expect 12" of powdery snow from 1" of rain because flakes crystallize with less water to form a more solid hexagonal snow crystal; you get a lot more snow flakes form the same 1" of rain.

Not there yet but I think I know the point of where you have reached in life.
As for the flood, the Mother Land is desperately in need of knowledgeable people and fresh ideas to better manage the situation. I only hope that the people in charge don't play "know it alls" and shut the door to others who have the potential to help.

I like your logic. The current administration has failed in this area because of not maintaining continuity in the maintenance and upgrades of the D & I and supporting systems. These acts are more to blame for the current crises than acts of nature and all other excuses given. Even the current crop of 'statements' that they're 'keeping an eye on things' while the situation gets worse are childish and irrelevant to say the least.
The diehard supporters of the present regime act like they know nothing of 'constructive criticism' which is simply pointing out to those close to you that there are better alternatives to what they are doing.
I often times wish that there were no words like race, ethnic origin etc in our vocabulary, but the truth is that they're there and some people still practice them in everything they do.

Your suggestions are very good ones. I have suggested resiting since 2004.
The fly in the ointment remains the perpetual "lame duck government" which shows absolutely no interest in getting this problem solved. Unless and until they can understand that they MUST govern for all of Guyana and NOT only for PPP supporters there can essentially NO PROGRESS!!!
I am not inclined to list the deliberate unpatriotic acts committed to date which incidentally outnumber their PROGRESSIVE acts. I for one feel that if they ACT like a government then they should be voted for but so far they certainly have NOT. They can begin by LISTENING!!!!!!

Hi Hackett what does someone do when he or she have co cup or palm tree. You seems to be an expert on social, economic, and politcal issues in blogg land. However, you must remember the these words brain wash, and trust in our community, the Guyanese community and then poverty or I must the manuplation of the poor. You have no say in that. The only time Guyanes would change or bring change our community is to leave Government alone and stop asking for hand out and let work for the common good of the ordinary man.

Happy New Year to all in Blogg Land, and a word to all pay attension to your health, eat healthy and exercise for the life a head.

"Do you know what eating four dry pitted prunes dusted in cinnamon can do" try it and you will see

The Guyana Gov't has a meteorological agency that monitors and record rainfall data. Rainfall is measured and records kept in inches. Once you get it you'll have to convert it to gallons using an available formula.

This was a top story item that appeared in the Guyana Chronicle on 12/22/08.The MBA minister should have been ashamed of himself to make a statement like this.

Aerial checks show drainage systems intact
By Sharief Khan
AS RESIDENTS along the coast brace themselves for a very wet Christmas, aerial checks of critical drainage systems in Berbice and the hard-hit East Coast Demerara yesterday showed that these were intact, Agriculture Minister Robert Persaud reported.

WE should not blame global warming for a system that has been left to sort itself out. Our leaders have failed in using the available knowledge and resources to design a proper D&I system that will best serve our needs. Why have we not increased the capacity of the pre-independence drainage system? Those systems worked(by design) for the size of communities and expanse of land then! Why are we not looking ahead and investing sufficiently in infrastructure to keep up with our increasing acreage of arable lands & population? What about the MMA phases? Abandoned?
It is time our leaders stop blaming high cost and acts of nature for their lack of drive and limited vision as far as our flood solutions are concerned. Our people must not find ready excuses for the current crop of underachievers we have as leaders. With the right approaches/strategies and use of appropriate knowledge and resources much of the yearly problems of flooding can be reduced. Our communities and farmers should not be left on a limb like this every rainy season.

Happy New Year to all Guyanese!!!!!!!
I hope GOD intervenes with better weather to save us from this flooding, am presently in GT having a first hand experience.
There are may places lower than our coastland throughout the world that don't flood. So running away to the less fertile higher ground, is not the solution. Just drive down the West Bank Demerara road and you will see at least 4 large defunct Kokers.
And the connecting canals I swam in as a child are now stagnant, filled with silt, bush, snakes and alligators. I can go on and on with examples to highlight the level of incompetence here.
So are we going to continue blaming the weather, being below sea level, Styrofoam boxes and plastic bottles?
Or get real and remove all the square pegs at all levels of our society.

Richard, you talk sense. The problem is most of the bloggers here are not interested in talking sense, only in political rhetoric, or, as I put it, pelting cups and palm trees at each.

Mother nature often fights back and defeat all our engineering efforts to prevent flooding. The US army core of engineers have been dealing with floodings across the US with a great deal of success as well as failures too. The current situation calls for our gov't to invest vast sums of money into the flood control system. We all know that funding and the technical skills necessary to do so would have to come from overseas.
This is not the time to play politics. It's time for everyone to get serious about this problem.
