Following the announcement by President Bharrat  Jagdeo that  a canal would be dug to drain the East Demerara Water Conservancy (EDWC) into the Atlantic Ocean, the Guyana Citizens’ Initiative (GCI) is calling for the government to urgently rehabilitate and reactivate the Cunha canal and sluice  on the East Bank of Demerara.

Although the GCI welcomes the announcement by the President the body feels that the rehabilitation of the Cunha canal and sluice is important in   addressing the problem with the conservancy. According to a release from the GCI, engineering and hydrological expertise available to it suggests that in addition to the new projected East Coast outlet, it is equally if not more important that the Cunha canal and sluice be reactivated as a matter of urgency. Cunha is located south of the 5 door flood structure at Land of Canaan on the plot of land on the East Bank sold to the Barama Company. According to the release, Barama proceeded to fill the canal and turn the Cunha outfall into a log storage area.

The GCI is calling for the government to approach the Barama Company immediately to repossess and re-establish control over the outlet.

According to the GCI the rehabilitation of the Cunha canal and sluice will immediately divert a significant volume of water coming from the southern part of the Conservancy towards the Demerara River. This is expected to relieve the pressure on the Northern section of the Conservancy dam also avoiding the release of water through the Maduni sluice into the Mahaica Creek except as a last resort.

“Barama proceeded to fill the canal and turn the Cunha outfall into a log storage area” =(Stupidity)^n, where n = very large number

  2. Sarkar CANADA says:

Well, this certainly tells a lot aboout the D&I bosses and our government. Why would they not retain control of such an important drainage outlet? They should heed this advise and proceed to have this canal rehabilitated. I still maintain that there is no need to move the population to higher ground. GY has the skills to overcome this situation, all it takes is for the government to review their decision makers and get rid of most of them!! Give people with intelligence and know how a chance to contribute. In such circumstances there is no room for complacency!!!

  3. indian BARBADOS says:

Kudos for GCI! We all should be vigilant and proactive as far as this problem is concerned. I am sure there exist volumes on the hydrological profiles along with solutions that can be used to bring relief to this sad situation.
The key here is for sustained and serious efforts(based upon knowledge) to remove the perceived weaknesses.

  4. Fulano de Tal UNITED STATES says:

Nooooooo don’t rehabilitate any sluices, fill them all up, give friends & cronies permission to fill them up for business. Take bribes from people who don’t even belong to Guyana but want to set up business & let them fill the sluices up so that there could be investment in Guyana. Then have our engineers build arks & waterproof homes. We’ll change from cars to boats & houses on stilts then we could be like Venice. All agriculture will be moved to the high regions & the current government & it’s apple dumpling gang could just jump on a yacht with a huge hole at the bottom & set sail to find the mouth of the Atlantic Ocean. That would be some welcome development in Guyana. Wha ayuh tink eh!?!

… the stupidity of filling the canals which was made possible by the ingenuity of ‘massa’ was first started during the regal reign of the “illegal govt” much like the mandela and now diamond dump !

only time will tell abt more of the idiocy that prevails !…

  5. Satar Amin CANADA says:

    Mr Editor
In light of the Cunha canal discovery, I believe the presidency
should thoroughly review its decision to introduce a new $3 bln
canal. The review should include among others the following:
    1. significant reduction of land under cane and paddy cultivation
    in regions 4 & 5
    2. closure of many drainage and irrigation canals that contribute
to the distribution of the EDWC water
    3. development of enormous and many housing schemes in REGIONS 4 & 5
    4. miniaturising and dereliction of existing d & i canals

  6. Ankoko UNITED STATES says:

It matters not what is done or not done there are bloggers here who would ALWAYS find a way to lay the blame for whatever goes wrong in this country on the PNC.
I care for neither the PPP or PNC (which are copies of the same document) but I wish to know when will the PPP become responsible for the havoc wreaked during its government? It has been 16 years that they are in power and any sustainable progress still seems to be a mirage!
It would be much more patriotic to spend the PNC bashing time trying to suggest sustainable and progressive improvements to the quality of life for those of us who still live or have remigrated here!!!

Just stop for a moment and take a breath:- “Drainage trenches, canals and outlets for flooded waters to be feasible irrigated out, have been blocked and filled-up, only to facilitate storages for timber-logs” and only now has come to the open eyes and to the view of the world how corrupt this government in Guyana, is.
What a pure nonsense………what a masquerade of madness ………what a lack of inefficiency on the drainage system…….what incompetence of duties by the sea and river terrain board of so-called directors, (calling themselves engineers, oh fly uncle charlie kite) and imagine, there is no water-way reserved land any more in Guyana.
God is not to be blamed for doing His work, it is the government of Guyana, who is standing and displaying themselves as “white-washed tombs” . They are the living dead, only ashamed to close their eyes

Another wasteful exercise, that appears to be gaining in momentum as the flood worsens.Foolishness well done I say.
