An alleged gold band snatcher was yesterday shot by a policeman who chased him after he reportedly snatched the band from a woman and ran away.
Police in a release said they are investigating the circumstances under which the 23-year-old man of Melanie Damishana, East Coast Demerara, was shot in the right thigh around 07:10 hrs yesterday on Lombard Street.
The release said the young man stanched the band from housewife Lalita Shivgobin of Cornelia Ida, West Coast Demerara, at Croal Street near where passengers disembark from minibuses.
An alarm was raised and several public-spirited citizens gave chase. They were joined by an armed policeman, who, in an effort to arrest the young man, shot him in the thigh.
The gold band was recovered and after being treated at the Georgetown Public Hospital the alleged thief was placed in police custody.

This is kind of news i love to read….a thief with an extra hole on him and in the pen….s/n you show the name of the victim but not the name or picture of this low life criminal attacking at 7;00 am……soon his beloved will claim that the public-spirited citizen and policeman got the wrong person ……..
go job gpf

Good jod all involved. I love when police and citizen work together for the good of this country. I hope he is put away for many years.
My sentiments exactly…
Good job so far by everyone involved, The police will now institute the charge,,,I am hoping that the magistrate does not put him on bail even though it is a bailable offence it can be refused due to the privelence of the offence, keep him in jail, do not release him to get lawyer money now…
Was it excessive force? Was the alleged thief shot while he was on the ground already subdued or was he shot while running from the police? We bloggers want to know the results of the investigation. ISNM
At the moment I am satisfied that he is caught with the loot. I am happy he was chased my public-spirited citizens and the police. He was not found cowering in some dark hole professing his innocence and the police shot him. These thieves need to understand that people mean business, only then they are going to think twice before they strike. They strike and people are going to strike back.
Yes John, this man snatched at the wrong time, wrong place, he should have received the shot in both hands, he would learn now, let’s see how much he would be able to run faster now.
Bad policing, when you have to shoot a fleeing person, what threat was he if he was running, they could’ve apprehended him without shooting him, now i know alot of you gonna get emotional here in your response, but this is my opinion.
Amen-ra, I totally respect your opinion but those guys are career criminals. They are well trained to snatch and run at bullet speed (no pun intended). The poor, tired enthusiastic people who chased him would not have caught up with him and he would have gone gloating.
amen, would you have thought the same if he had stole from you?
What threat was he if he was running ? Well he could have escape and rob somebody else & maybe killing them in the process.
SN please, you have a right to name and shame,in a situation like this!!!
Yes. men-ra, pity he wasn’t shot where one thigh meets the other thigh.
This cop should be commended for using the minimum amount of force in apprehending this menace II society.
