My condolences to the family. Its almost impossible to predict how a tree will behave in high winds unless there is some visible damage or rot .I had a similar experience in a German forest when a big strapping ,healthy tree came crashing down in a gust of win, narrowly missing a line of men queuing for dinner. What we did observe, howevever is that the ground was 95%sand,the tree had no main root, and those almost surface roots which extended outwards, did not have a strong enough grip to hold that tree stable in high winds.

This is truly sad and my heartfelt condolences go out to his family. I sincerely hope that steps will be taken to avoid this kind of thing in the future.
