A man who allegedly stole items from Police Traffic Headquarters, Eve Leary died shortly after he was shot in the left thigh by a policeman during a chase which ended at Anira Street, Queenstown early yesterday morning.
Police, in a press statement said they are investigating an incident that occurred around 4.45 am at Anira Street. They said the unidentified man had stolen a windscreen off a minibus that was lodged in the compound at Police Traffic Headquarters and was subsequently shot in his left thigh by a policeman. He later died at the Georgetown Public Hospital while receiving medical attention.
Investigations, police said, revealed that the man had been seen earlier riding a bicycle in the vicinity of Traffic Headquarters. He was subsequently seen leaving the Traffic Headquarters compound with a front windscreen that had been taken off a minibus. Ranks on duty challenged him but he ran away.
The man, according to the police, was pursued and the policemen caught up with him at Anira Street, “and during efforts to arrest him he was shot to his left upper thigh by one of the ranks who was armed with a service firearm”.
The stolen windscreen was recovered along with the bicycle which was found in the Police Sports Club Ground, which is next to Traffic Headquarters. The man, police said, was of African descent, about 30 years of age, 5’ 6” in height and of medium build.
He was clad in a brown short pants and grey jersey. The body is at Lyken’s Funeral Parlour.
An Anira Street resident, who lives in the vicinity of the empty lot, recalled hearing one gunshot shortly after 5.30 am.
“I was already up and about when I heard this one gunshot,” the resident recalled. “When I peep out I see this chap lying on the ground with blood coming from his right leg…there were two policemen with him.”
The man, according to the resident, had a bag. Two screwdrivers were also removed from the man’s possession.
“Lil after the police shoot he, the ambulance show up to take he to the hospital,” the resident said.
Hospital sources said the man was bleeding profusely from his wound and died shortly after his arrival at GPH. However, the cause of death is yet to be determined.

nice to see the cops takes drastic action
What the hell is wrong with you…shooting an unarmed man to beyond drastic action .. is coldblooded murder.
… WHY u tink some thing wrong wid he ????? … WHY was he “resisting” the cops ??????? WHY did he run when told to stop ??????…he was armed with 2 ,, not 1 ,, but 2 s/drivers !
the 2 cops could have been seriously wounded ,, if he had a chance to turn the screw drivers into a weapon !…..
This crime story is an improvement over usual SN fare. The word “alleged” is used in headline and copy for example. The journalit quotes fom a police report. There is padding at the end but not excessive like in some other stories. The race of the dead person is stated but this is cleraly for the purposes of helping realtives come forward to identify view the body.
SN however can’t seem to resist bringing in remarks from “residents”. Naturally, they are all unamed. This anonymity would not be done with an serious newspaper.
But wait a minute ! A man carrying a mini bus windscreen on a bicycle ?
this story has some loose ends…this is the police version of course.
they took him there …. Think people Anira st is far from Eve Leary, bicycle found @ Police sports club(next door)
Lets suppose that the cops only had access to a bicycle this man should be caught @ Lamaha st??????
the police must stop shotin unarmed people!!!real thing
THEY SHOT HIS LEG TO CAPTURE HIM, THEY DID NOT SHOT HIM TO KILL HIM. GET REAL!
So if they shot him to stop his escape in the thigh, how in the world he died? Not every Guyanese is a jackass.
i bet the man wasn’t even armed…they could have easily catch the culprit rather than shooting him.
Policemen should be more learnt in anatomy. They would have known that an injury to the thigh, can result in massive hemorrhage and subsequent death. They could have apprehended the guy without killing him.Furthermore there was delay at some time after being shot..if he was tended to early enough,he would not have died.
Sandman just a hint someone had to direct him to the act because he new where the market was. The police had a chance to clean up crime here using a professional approch because its the social misfits are use to do the dirty work
Of course the Police are not subject to the Geneva Convention,so they are not obliged to use Equal Force.
SandHurst, check out the Guyana observer online radio and you will get more on the story.
another early marning thief bite de dust.he was in the right place at the wrong time doin the wrong business.no sadness here when they have to go like this.big strong and healthy tryin to get rich quick.
… likely femoral artery sliced open … bleed to death … could have been saved by a tourniquet …
I agree with you on this one .
FREESPEECH, KILL A MAN FOR A WINDSCREEN ? WHAT NEXT. THERE WILL ALWAYS BE PETTY THIEVES NOT ONLY IN GUYANA BUT AROUND THE WORLD.
SO TRUE
I agree with you. This man could have been saved and prosecuted to the full extent of the law thats real justice. I think its all wrong to shoot a an unarmed man for stealing a wind screen. If you shoot some in the upper leg the possibility of them bleeding out is high.
Yes had to be a main artery, leading from the femoral, what I’m wondering is, the femoral is located in the inner, was he shot facing this cop?, couldn’t be from behind.
Dr. MXQ..LOL
Though not condoning the deeds of this thief,I am willing to bet that the police stood by and watch him bleeding while waiting on the ambulance.
QUESTION: Are the police allowed to render first aid in these circumstances?….. Can anyone tell?
On the other hand, the contempt shown for the police HQ compels me to show him no mercy.
yea Doc…if dat artery does not get enough pressure after a puncture to clod de blood…will bleed to death fast…so de police dat shot him is more like a sergeon…good shot…
… not yet, ulric, … and not the medical kind … do know some basic first aid …
…that’s why i always wear a good strong leather belt 55″ long … useful device …. could never tell when i might need it …
lol, “could have been saved by a tourniquet” you mean a piece bicycle tire or a old piece of cloth?
This one already performed postmortem on the man and he all the way in England. “likely femoral artery sliced open” you mean he main vein in he foot right? lol some people!!!
Many of the bloggers here do not know what a tourniquet is “mxqbhmb”
…shf, i’m wondering how some of them will pronounce it!….
55″ is quite a girth.
they can try turn- knee -K, if they wanna give it a shot
Are the police so scared, that they have to shoot a fleeing unarmen man.
Congratulations to the police for at least shooting in the leg. Normally not a vital organ of the body. Two unfortunate souls in two days. One shot in the leg and the other electrocuted in electricity starved Guyana.
Do people steal from the GPF impound lot? I give him high marks for bravery and zero for bad judgment.
Good call SWAT.
This thief appeared to have been STEALING TO ORDER.
Looks like the GPF Impound Lot was his warehouse.
The police are dammed if they do and dammed if they don’t.
The cop clearly was NOT aiming at the criminal’s vital organs, yet bloggers here are trying to blame the officer.
BOTTOM LINE: You resist arrest, you pay the consequences. NOT JUST IN GUYANA FOLKS.
The police them self thiefing, a few years back the
police month end pay roll was missing from the finance
dept at eve lary HQ.
From Traffic HQ to Anira Street is long way, more than a mile I think. Why did it take ’so far’ to catch him?
Did the shooter just shoot to ease his frustration at having to chase the guy that far?
my thoughts exactly
