The driver of the vehicle involved in the accident at Corentyne on Sunday in which a woman died and 14 others were injured appeared at the Springlands Magistrate’s Court yesterday on a charge of causing death by dangerous driving and was granted bail.

Narine Chattergoon, 44, of Bath, West Coast Berbice appeared before Magistrate Krisendatt Persaud at the Springlands Magistrate Court and was granted bail in the sum of $500,000 or  $1 million surety. He was remanded to prison pending payment, the police said in a press release.

Chattergoon was the driver of the pick-up that was involved in an accident at Number 53 Village, Corentyne, on Sunday resulting in the death of 32-year-old Drupatie Indal of Canje, Berbice. The vehicle was said to be overloaded and speeding at the time.

Indal, a mother of two, was one of 16 people who were being transported in a pick-up, belonging to a Community Policing Group Patrol of ‘B’ Division, when it collided with a parked tractor after the driver lost control of the vehicle. Indal, who was seated in the tray of the pickup, was thrown out of the vehicle along the Number 53 Village roadway. She was taken to the Skeldon Hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
