An eight-year-old girl of Dakara, Linden- Soesdyke Highway was yesterday afternoon admitted to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) nursing five pellet wounds to her neck after she was shot by an unknown man.

Christine Reevers was listed in stable condition at the hospital up to press time.
Her worried mother, Maureen Flores, told Stabroek News that the girl was playing in the yard with her three sisters around 2:30 when she was shot. Flores said the pellets entered and exited the child’s neck and injured both her shoulders in the process.

She said because yesterday was the child’s birthday, she and her husband decided not to send her to school. The woman said she heard her daughter crying and when she ran out of the house to see what had happened, Christine came running to her with blood streaming down her clothes. She was then rushed to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre to seek medical attention. Flores said she was not satisfied with the treatment given to her daughter at that medical institution so she decided to take the injured child to the GPH. She was at a loss as to who would want to injure her young daughter on her birthday.

The child’s father Lane Reevers, who was also at the hospital yesterday, told Stabroek News that he was in the process of taking a bath when he heard what sounded like a gunshot .The man, who appeared confused, said his daughter gave him a brief description of a man who shot at her. He said he does not have any grievances with anyone and like his wife questioned who would want to injure his daughter

Reevers said he reported the matter to the police yesterday afternoon and expressed hope that the perpetrator will be arrested.

It is well for you guys to make fun of the situation at the Dianostic centres, but just imagine the frustration of the doctors there when a serious case comes to them, and they are feel so helpless because the hospital has nothing for the doctors to work with,in order to help the patients, and most of the times what is needed is never there, everything is always in short supply & doctors are expected to save lives, if you find that the patients are given panadol and injections everytime, well that is what the doctors have to work with and that is why there are always referrals to the Georgetown Hospital, one cannot expect doctors to perform adequately if they are given basket to fetch water, so to speak, and when comparsions are made between their country and the country where they were trained, where the tools were available to work with, then the thinking is, that I should have stayed there instead of returning to this God forsaken country,

Why was the child not sent to school because it was her birthday? Birthdays are special days but education is far more importand that that those days of running around doing nothing. The parents could have celebrated after she came home from school. With all these crazy people with guns, we have to be thoughtful of the decisions we make. This whole thing is strange and I hope the child recovers quickly.
