-no debt resolution as yet

The Georgetown Mayor and City Council is yet to reach an agreement with the two companies contracted to collect refuse in the city.

The companies Cevons Waste Management and Puran Brothers Disposal Service withdrew their services after the Council had racked up a substantial debt. In a release on Monday, the Council had placed the value of the debt at $24 million. However, the Council’s Public Relations Officer Royston King told this newspaper yesterday that the debt owed to both companies is in fact about $60 million.  He explained that this sum would have been racked up from late last year up to about May of this year.

According to King, the Council paid both companies $2.5 million apiece earlier this week but said that this was not enough to ensure a resumption of operations.  He said that since Wednesday, no additional payments have been made.

King said that the city council is trying desperately to bring an end to the impasse by raising funds. He disclosed that the Council has been tightening up its debt collection, as part of the exercise to raise the money. He also said that Mayor Hamilton Green has been approaching big businesses which owe the Council in an attempt to get them to settle their arrears quickly.

King described the situation as an “unfortunate one” but said that the M&CC is working to bring a resolution to the situation by “early next week.” In the meantime, he is urging all residents who can transport their garbage to the landfill site to do so.

The PRO, meanwhile, disclosed that Cevons Waste Management is still collecting refuse from the market, while the Mayor and City Council has been collecting waste from the hospital and the abattoir.

  3. The Council is “placing the value of the debt at $24 million” but its Public Relations Officer- Royston King is saying that, “the debt owed to both companies is in fact about $60 million”. The difference between these two estimates is highly significant. Will some one say who is speaking the truth? There is compelling evidence, that the council is incapable of managing an efficient solid waste management program and it must urgently explore other workable alternatives. In several cities in Ontario, citizens pay about C$2. to dispose of a bag of garbage that is not expected to exceed 50 pounds. This is however, exclusive of property taxes. Can this system not be adopted to save a situation from a catastrophic end? Incidentally, my neighbours on the WCD pay G$100. (to one of the companies embroiled in the debt reconciliation) for disposing of a barrel of garbage and from all appearances, the system is efficient. Guyana mean daily ambient temperature hovers around 29 degrees Celsius and this certainly accelerates the rate of decomposition of organic waste. It is therefore necessary, that a reliable and efficient weekly solid waste collection and disposal system must be in place; if not, the city residents will be literally living in a landfill. The public health implications of squalid environmental conditions can be better defined by the Medical Officer of Health of the city of Georgetown. He/she has a responsibility to protect the health of the citizens within the city limits. Full stream solid waste disposal system comes at a heavy price that will continue to hurt the pocket books of the impoverished city and it may be time for it to find a way out of this mess. Good luck! to its council…

The city council should take over this business. Purchase the garbage trucks and employ the citizens to work. Private companies will charge over and excessive amounts. The mayor needs to step down as well. His hour is up so let’s keep it real and moving!!!
