–court hears

A 24-year-old teacher, who allegedly told one of his students to pay him $10,000 if she wanted to pass her exams, was yesterday remanded to prison until July 4.

Rohan Bishop appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court yesterday to answer the charge of demanding money with menace.

It is alleged that on June 8 at Georgetown, Bishop of 117 Meadow Brook Gardens, with menace, demanded the sum of $10,000 from a student in order for her to pass her examinations.

Bishop pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to him by the Acting Chief Magistrate.

The virtual complainant who is a minor explained that she had failed two subjects taught by Bishop and had been told by him that she had to pay the sum of $10,000 if she wished to pass the subjects.

Police Corporal Munilall Seetaram objected to bail on the grounds that there is a likelihood the defendant may interfere with the  witness and may not return to court for the trial.

The matter was called to the bench and a lengthy discussion ensued.

Bishop was subsequently remanded to prison and the prosecution requested that the file be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for advice.

This is the society cultivated by the PHENC and the PPP.

When the PHENC started banning food items and various imports left right and center it created an underground economy and a culture of stealing and bribing.

This has now gone into overdrive with the PPP.

    • Soldier UNITED STATES says:

I told Reddy yesterday that Samaroo is a very bright fella, but he getting leading up from the wrong people…He is addmitting what the PNCR did…Very Good for that….The part with the PPP is being told to you by people who are bent in misleading you Sam…

  4. BORAPORK CANADA says:

The rot seems to permeate every nook and cranny. Will the government please do something to right this sinking ship?
This is the expected outcome when people are fleeing. A very small contingent remains that is dedicated while the vast majority is unqualified, substandard and filling roles they would not normally occupy. I fear until there is a change in government similar accusations will become common place.

    • zainno CANADA says:

The rot that presently premeates the guyanese society was left by the government that you are implying can do better.

    • SKY UNITED STATES says:

How long has the PPP been in power again? I ask because everytime you criticize the government someone comes forward and claims that the PNC caused the problem. So even today the last PNC government is creating problems.

    • Sarkar CANADA says:

Zainno, what you are saying doesn’t really hold much water! When I was in school, at least Secondary school, the teachers ALL had some sort of recognition behind their names. Not so today!!! How can you have a CXC graduate preparing others for CXC? It simply does not add-up!

  5. if this allegation is true, this is what the teaching profession has gone too.
    may the lord help us.

    • Mac CAYMAN ISLANDS says:

I do not think the teaching profession has sunk to that level as yet. As one blogger puts it there are a few “bad eggs” which will threaten to spoil the whole bunch. Yes a lot of teachers have left and the profession in Guyana is now inundated with unqualified teachers; some using it as a stepping stone and some that is all they can do to earn a living. To be a good teacher you must love the job and no teacher who really loves the job will do something as foolish as that. Instead the teacher will seek new and innovative ways to help the student learn the subject well and be able to pass.

Perhaps the Govt. has the opportunity now to make this stop. Pay teachers well, provide them with more benefits, improve the conditions under which they work so that it will be a factor in preventing our professional teachers from leaving. Also, intense monitoring from the ministry and headteachers and other administrative staff will put an end to this situation. I even read about one teacher being nabbed at a hotel with a student demanding sex in exchange for better grades. This is cruel and gross.

    • "All gane Lake" CANADA says:

I wonder if he paid his way to become a teacher, for he seems to have no morals and principles.

    • SKY UNITED STATES says:

Those are good suggestions Mac but we both know it’s not going to happen and the ppp supporters will not demand it they will simply accept is as something caused by the past pnc government. If this weren’t so sad it would be funny.

AGLake. So true!! I remember giving one a good ‘talking to’ when he told some students: ‘If you want to pass the CXC then come to my lessons after school’!

There is a clear pattern that has developed in Guyana, the police and teachers taking bribes, two professions that are grossly underpaid.

    • evileyes((RAMJATAN FUH PREZIDENT ENY ONE)) CANADA says:

would you do a job if you were grosly underpaid??
or i should ask, would you even consider taking a job where you knew in advance that you would be grosly be underpaid?

    • LoveGt4Real TURKS AND CAICOS ISLANDS says:

      Nonsense evileyes, absolutely nonsense!

If these people choose teaching as a career then do you expect them to be doing carpentry instead?

Like the rest if us, these people have bills to pay, kids to feed etc, and their choice in career should at least provide them with the most basic of living. (Unless yourself and Mighty are suggesting that all public servants should quit their jobs out of poor pay)

What’s more, you are deliberately overlooking the fact that there are not many options in Gt as regards better wages so what are they to do as an alternative?

And if you think this case is bad, then be advised that it’s just the tip of the iceberg as there are cases where female students were made to offer up sexual favors in exchange for grades.

If guilty, this teacher should be made to face the consequences for his evil deeds.

thanks but you and me agree on most things here except this it seems..no one in talking about bills to pay and mouths to feed…we are talking about what the blogger said about low wages…maybe you didnt read into my blog carefully….
do you honestly believe police and teachers taking bribes coz of low wages?
i say again they know why they take these jobs because they know it comes with authority over others and comes the perks behind it…nuff ah dem does run from guyana and go to trinidad and then turn round an seh dem leave guyana coz of violence and killing…ehehehehehehehehe you now getting me drift eh???
thanks..lets keep it simple and fair ok..

There is a quote I can remember that goes something like this: “For in the hands of statesmen we place our lives and properties, but in the hands of teachers we place our very notion of civilization and humanity itself.” This one is no statesman or teacher. Jail him if guilty.

  8. If guilty I don’t believe taxpayers money should be wasted by sending this teacher to jail. He should be made to pay a fine and banned from teaching.
On the other hand, the law enforcement officer are the biggest culprits at taking bribes. When my brother’s vehicle was stolen in guyana we were approached by cops suggesting we pay them if we want to find the car. I have witness mamy mini buses stopped for some violation and the traffic cops took payment or demand payment then send the buses on their way. Thats how police make thier money in G/T.
Its sad to see this trend trickle into the education system. It should be nipped in the bud before it gets out of hand.

  9. elijah UNITED STATES says:

teachers in my time were real professionals…hygiene and learnig were priority.. they were respected as guardians.. now teaching is just another job or hustle..

    • dean ANTIGUA AND BARBUDA says:

Elija… For some teaching is a job, while for some it is a profession. There is a difference. The teacher is innocent until proven guilty. How manytimes in Guyan persons were not framed for one stinking reason or the other. Lets not be too quick to judge. And I really cant understand why some brainless people would want to test the real professionals.Analyze b4 you criticize.
