Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson ordered a labourer to keep the peace for two years and to serve a period of community service after he admitted stealing a quantity of mangoes because  “de tree de loaded and yuh could see that de people deh don’t use de mango.”

On June 17, at Georgetown, Lindon Ferrell, 40, of Seven, Avenue ‘A’ Field, Sophia stole the mangoes, valued $1,000, the property of Paul Fraser. He admitted to the charge of larceny when he on Thursday appeared in the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court. The defendant told the court that in passing he noticed a tree in full bloom and decided to stop and pick the mangoes as the fruits would usually fall and spoil.

“Meh worship, de tree de loaded and yuh could see that de people deh don’t use de mango suh I just decide fuh stop an pick some when de owner come and start clapping some serious blows in me…If yuh see how one a dem hold on meh neck, I thought a woulda dead. When ah see de police come ah feel nice cause deh rescue meh,” he explained.

Police Corporal Munilall Seetaram told the court that Ferrell, who is no stranger to the court, is a known mango thief.

Ferrell then begged the court for leniency and to be sentenced to community service. “Meh worship, I would clean up dis whole court yard fuh yuh, de toilet an all. I could start from now an all meh worship, me ain’t gat a problem,” he declared.

The magistrate subsequently put Ferrell on a bond to keep the peace for two years and sentenced him to three weeks community service at the Brickdam Police Station.

The defendant was overjoyed at the magistrate’s decision and as he left the court room repeatedly shouted, “Meh worship, thanks God gon bless yuh, thank you very much.”
