Well-known former radio broadcaster Pat Cameron better known as ‘Aunty Pat’ is gravely ill in a US hospital.
Cameron, whose voice was one of the best known on the local airwaves for some four decades before she migrated, is said to have suffered a ruptured brain aneurysm. According to reports, she was placed on a respirator but it has since been removed and she is breathing on her own.
Ron Robinson, a veteran broadcaster himself, worked with Aunty Pat for many years and he recalled that she was “the aunty” of many even those who were older than her. Robinson said she was an aunty to him and Vic Insanally in their early years of broadcasting. She had a popular radio programme titled ‘A visit with Patricia’ on which she did features.
“She is the finest female broadcaster the Caribbean has every produced,” Robinson told Stabroek News.
Cameron worked alongside another iconic female broadcaster, Olga Lopes-Seale also known as ‘Aunty Olga’, who now lives in Barbados.
Apart from being a broadcaster Aunty Pat was also an actress and had performed at the Theatre Guild.
This newspaper has also learnt that Cameron had also been having eye problems and is now blind.
The 85-year-old Cameron has three children, Gail, Dianne and Christopher.

I recall eagerly heading home after school to turn on the radio to Sunshine Corner………. no TV”s back in those days.
Best of wishes to you dear Aunty Pat
LoveGT , I did the same . Used to run quickly after school over and as soon as I enter the door , the first thing I did was turn on the radio to Sunshine Corner . Gosh those days ,Hope she gets better.
A speedy recovery, auntie Pat. I can recall many fine moments listening to this wonderful woman telling a nancy stories. I had the pleasure of meeting her when she came to visit my school. Really, Guyana has produced many great broadcasting personalities, I wish there was a hall of fame of some sorts to recognize icons such as auntie Pat.
She blazed a trail and set a standard. The broadcasters today have alot to learn from her. Radio has never been the same since Phylisis Jackson, Margaret Lawrence, Angela Massiah, and female broadcaster of that ilk left
Uncle 174.114.192.24 great idea a hall of fame should be created to honor and recognise their contribution.Without tv their voices entertained us.Best wishes and speedy recovery auntie Pat
i remember her voice like it was yesterday ,,as she said over the phone when she called me to say i have not been selected as a broadcaster during the “illegal regal reign” !…..
i pray that ur pains be less severe !
thanks for the memories !….
Yeah, with-out any doubt, she was the best in the Caribbean. I don’t recall her doing sunshine corner, but I do recall her as being super versatile. She could fit in to any crowd and age group. She was so creative. I know the program woman’s world went down and died after she left. I met her once when she came to our school also. She was my icon. Hope she gets well.
I remember Pat during her broadcasting career. A warm loving person she was. I wish her well.
