Some concession holders operating along the UNAMCO trail, who saw a strange Hummer in the area, believe their fellow miner Thakoor Persaud who was ambushed and gunned down on Tuesday along the trail was targeted.
Persaud, 34, of Old Road, Sara Johanna, East Bank Demerara and his employees Ravi Deobarran and Solomon Low-A-Chee were in vehicle BKK 8654 heading to a mining concession along the UNAMCO trail when they stopped to remove a tree that had fallen across the road and came under heavy gunfire. Deobarran and Low-A-Chee said they ran into the bushes and hid for hours. Upon their return they found Persaud on the ground dead.
So far there has been no word on any police operation in the area to flush out the gunmen. Deobarran and Low-A-Chee remain in police custody assisting in the investigation.
Speaking with Stabroek News several persons said they felt Persaud was specifically targeted for unknown reasons. According to one person, two days prior to the incident he and others were on the trail when they noticed a strange vehicle speeding by. He described the vehicle as a heavily-tinted enclosed Black Hummer with more than one person in it. But because of the heavy tint and the pace at which the vehicle was driving it was difficult for him to see exactly who it was.
“You know is normal to discuss some things especially when you are not accustomed to seeing it around,” the source said. “So is yesterday I been telling them man bout dis Hummer after I come out and they been telling me bout wha happen to dem men.”
Another miner then said that while he and others were heading to Ituni on Wednesday after 5 pm they crossed paths with a Hummer fitting the same description heading in the direction of Linden. He said the way the vehicle was being driven indicated that whoever was behind the wheel was not very familiar with the trail or was in a great rush.
“Is funny,” the second miner said. “Dis vehicle was seen going in deh two days before de brother get kill and then it didn’t come out back until some hours after the police dem came out with the body and dem men. Something ain’t right! But I ain’t have nothing further to say because this thing deep. It left up to the police to do their ting and find out what they gat to find out. We ain’t getting involve.
“That bush is where we make our living and everybody does mine their own business. You have one and two persons on other concessions that you would know personally but that is one place most people usually mind their own business. But we can’t help but wonder because this thing happen so ‘mud-up’.”
According to Persaud’s wife he was originally scheduled to travel to the area on Sunday last.
According to the men they were aware that Persaud had a mining operation along the trail as he was seen on numerous occasions with his men in the area. They said they were not sure of the exact location of his operation but knew him to have had an authentic operation. Persaud had been charged in May 2007 in connection with the discovery of cocaine in fish glue. He was later exonerated.
Stabroek News learnt that on Wednesday, a worker was heading out of a concession where he works with the hope of hitching a ride to Kwakwani to get supplies. He said that he got a ride on a DPL truck and when they reached “28 kilometres Old Cattle Trail, approximately 10 km past the Variety Woods operation,” they came upon a fallen tree across the road. Unaware of the three men’s ordeal, he said, they moved the tree and continued their journey. He said it was not until they got out of the area that they learnt of the incident and were told that the police had already taken out the body. “But why did they lef deh tree lying cross the road!” he exclaimed.
The group of men said while they are not afraid to return on the trail, they would rather wait a few days before doing so.

How many hummers are in Guyana? Go to work police. I still believe it’s a settling of accounts.
exactly do you think the foolice in GT will find anyone?
dem chaps well connected to you know who man.
Well connected.
wow! hummers in guyana and people complaining about VAT…lol
well a good lead, “HOW MANY BLACK HUMMER ARE THERE IN GUYANA”.
with that info the popo should have already impound all hummer and take sample of the dirt on them, also the dirt on the mats.
DON”T ANYONE TAKE THE PLATE NUMBER. never read of anyone giving this info. to the popo.
Good work guy, tell the police what to do in this blog and the hummer owner will sanitize his machine. I know you are trying to help since the police haven’t shown much smarts in their investigation skills.
how many black hummers with tinted windows is right.
Come on freespeech this is very good info.
What you want the witness to get a DNA sample also? I bet this is not enough evidence for your boy seelal though he is going to need proofs as soldier says before he start any investigation.
As usual,Samaroo always wild,,,You are very poor in the investigation business and you have to learn from people like Seelall, that is what took him to the top of the Criminal Investigation Department…Police do not operate like you and your boys in the AFC, just running your mouths, this is a simple case and in one week’s time your will see the results…
Learn what from Seelall..soldier????????how to take orders???? Them fellas might want to investigate…..think them want to lose them pension????Commissioner of Police don’t control the Police department……since Independence…….was Congress Place…..now is Freedom House……anybody think different…..I got a bridge to sell them…….
Plain and simple it was a set up, and the public knows that, there’s more to this story, if you dig deeper we will find out that he may have been involved with something illegas that caused his demise.
the Hummer should be an interesting lead. there are only about 10 in Guyana, and shouldn’t be hard to trace.
whatever it is, there is something fishy about the victim. how was he able to purchase the dredge and finance his operation? given his previous charge, the answer is easy. note too, he was charged because he was found in the house with the cocaine in the midst of a packing operation. note too he was only acquited because the owner of the house took the rap for the others.
yes bloggers, we have real hummers here. Not Japanese, American. 2007 and 2008 models too.
How do they afford the gas for those things? Oh that’s right these are “businessmen”.
ten hummers?, interesting, but you in ol’ usa how you know the exact amount of hummers in gt.
Seculation and rumour mongering. Non-story.
what are you doing on these blogs again Red Rover, this is not speculation this is called a lead which your foolice should be following and investigating to debunk.
Shouldn’t you be helping Guyanese in BIM who are not legal there? shouldnt you setup some kind of an office where these people can come in and make arrangements with you to leave voluntarily so that they are not rounded up like cattle?
what exactly is the government of Guyana paying you to do there?
You are on here day in day out instead of serving the people of our country, this is actually quite representative of the PPP all they are interested in is propaganda.
Come on go and do some work, stop being lazy and shirking your responsibility.
How Is this a “non story” beready.. look @ this guys history and connect the dots eh!!
You need to start working on gathering your evidence….get to work!!!
Like I said, Reddy is placed here to incite a reaction from us so we can be tagged. Have you seen SandHurst lately?
I can’t believe a man who is supposed to be educated(?) can come up with some of the prate he belches here. Only when one sense has emancipated itself from the body one can utter such balderdash.
reddy like you forget that is the Stabroek news you reading man.
strange indeed. well I am waiting for a police report or I will settle for the views i see here from the “enlightened” minds that usually comments here
those people in custody has to know the answer why did they leave the body
Well there are just a few black hummer in this country but the people who own them are untouchables so I am not holding my breath. I would not be shocked if someone from one of the ‘troubled’ villages of the East Coast or East Bank is held so as to appease. This whole story is far from what meets the eye.
just a few mean three, are they in the police custody as yet. lol.
another ‘businessman’ was shot… we needed SN to tell us that it was an ambush? really, we know Guyana well enough. as soon as the term ‘businessman’ is used the hair at the back of my neck stands up!
OUR POLICE KNOW THAT MANY SO CALL BUSINESS MAN ARE ALL DRUGS DEALER ,THEY USE THE BUSINESS AS AN FRONT TO COVER THEIR DIRTY DEEDS.AN WY ARE VEHICLES ARE ALLOWED TO BE TINTED ,SO DARK ,THOUGHT THIS WAS THE ;LAW FOR NO TINT.WELL LOOK AT ALL THE OWNERS OF THE HAMMERS YOU WILL KNOW WHO WAS THAT PERSON THEW POLICE KNEW WHO THAT WAS ,BUT MONEY RUN THINGS.
