The government is taking immediate steps to ensure that children stranded in India over non-payment for services at the Frontier Lifeline Hospital in Chennai return home, and that outstanding charges to the hospital are met.

In a press release last night Minister of Health Dr Leslie Ramsammy said he had been instructed by President Jagdeo to take all necessary action to see that the children came home and for his ministry to put arrangements in place to prevent a recurrence of this situation.

He asked that anyone who agreed to go with individuals and organizations in the future contact the ministry so they could verify that everything was in order. The Ministry of Health, he continued, would not support an organization or individual with money to leave Guyana unless they could demonstrate they had the remaining funds to cover services abroad. Some of the children stranded in India had made requests to the government and had received support.

Ramsammy noted that this was the second time his ministry had had to pay outstanding bills for children seeking medical attention outside.

He said he had been in contact with Guyana’s High Commissioner to India Ronald Gajraj asking that he arrange for the children’s return and meet outstanding financial obligations.

The families of the children at the Frontier Lifeline Hospital are asked to contact the Ministry of Health.

Only Guyanese could turn a simple trip to a hospital into an embarrassing international hostage drama. Guyanese seem to think people in foreign countries owe them things. They think Bajans and others owe them places to live and jobs. Ms. Varshnie Singh obviously thought the Indians owed Guyanese children medical care, until she could get around to do fundraising after the fact. lol. You overseas Guyanese need to put your money where your mouths are and donate money to Guyanese charities, so people like Ms. Singh don’t have to travel the world cup or cap in hand begging and poor Guyanese are not shamed before the world. I hope you learn from this experience that some people in the world, like the Indians, won’t put up with your nonsense for as long as Bajans have been putting up with it.

Disgrace my foot! This lady is trying her best and doing things no one else wants to do. Instead of backing her, the Government just waits for a slip-up so to bad-mouth her efforts. Shame on GoG for not stepping up to the plate sooner. Sounds like they give Varshnie the Royal Run Around then are quick to jump and criticize. Read properly and see that there was an arrangement that is now changed hence the mix-up. You know, this reminds me of that young lady who had to attempt suicide before anything was done about her rape. Children had to be held hostage before GoG could stump up. A BIG FAT SHAME ON THE GOVERNMENT OF GUYANA! Thank you Varshnie, keep up your very good work!

  4. blacksage CAYMAN ISLANDS says:

Ramsammy, maybe if your ministry offers financial assistance before, rather than after, this fiasco can be prevented.

Nevertheless, the individual or organization which is responsible for these children’s suffering, ought to be exposed and censured.

  5. What a shame it had to come to this, but thanks to the ministry for clearing up the situation, hope we never have another recurrence, and personnel who are in charge get all their funds before venturing out.

Quit griping Jagdeo and pay the bill. Ramsammy, if only you would promote better health care services, then the government would not be in this mess – it’s the least the government can do.

  7. Salt Fish & Bake UNITED STATES says:

This is a very nice gesture on the part of the government. I like the way it has recognized its role and is stepping up here for guyanese in need. Now let’s apply that same common sense and extend a similar gesture to guyanese currently stranded in barbados.

I understand the reason why these kids got left in India is because of some breakdown in understanding of the payment terms between the former Mrs. Jagdeo and the hospital. I sincerely hope that government’s decision is done through a sense of responsibility more than it is an ex-husband seizing the opportunity to make himself look good over the failings of the former first lady as some people might suspect. People, a president is never that petty; well, I hope.

    • bajegal UNITED STATES says:

Salt Fish & Bake, Guyanese are not stranded in Barbados. They don’t want to leave Barbados. They don’t want to go back to Guyana, and it is obvious why.

So we now need to set up a new IAC for the kids, just kidding :) I do agree it’s a shame, that our Gov’t can’t assure proper medical care for its citizens. It’s sad to say, this is the norm, no water, electricity etc. the list goes on.This shows a blatant disregard for the nation, but of course, bills are passed in Parliament to ensure the future HIGH LIFE of HIS EXCELLENCY. This is purely disgusting, I don’t know how these folks can use a mirror.
