I am a Barbadian and I would like to apologise to all Guyanese who have been offended by my countrymen in this immigration issue.
I want to make it clear that there are many of us, Barbadians, who welcome our Guyanese brothers and sisters to our shores. We are all members of one Caribbean community. It pleases my heart when I go to the rum shop and see Guyanese having a drink. Then I see the image of a truly united Caribbean. The interaction that I witness between Guyanese and Barbadians in these settings convinces me that the majority of us are have no problem with other Caribbean people coming to our shores. It is easy to get the wrong impression from the minority of zenophobes.

Hello passers by on this column.

I read the newspapers to catch up with the latest news in the Caribbean, mostly Guyana. However, I have been reading lately many Guyanese people were deported from Trinidad and Barbados? Can somebody answer this, if they say Guyana is a good Country, then why all these people still going to those countries in illegal status and working? They are only humilating their country and themselves. It is more shameful being deported when caught by officials. Why they treated like that in other countries is because they always do frauds when others do the rest follow. So it never the first or last, many people travel with illegal documents, the yknow how to do fraud the yare wise at it...when they are caught up with immigration then the backlash. So now the watchdog is always after them either from Trinidad or Guyana or Barbados. Just the other day the Lady who was deported even she was a high rist preganancy, immigration has no mercy for any one who over stay and breach their visa, by now they should know this...especially Canada and USA, UK they are much more stricker than ever. The internet is a good tool, gives people the opportunity to network and connected with the World, but some use it for illegal porposes. So just the same way people travel with false documents crossing immigration with a fiscal document in their hand when not properly identified. If you belong to one community make sure you are with the right type of people notthe kinds who do illegal activities or troublemakers, that is why I like the South Asians/India people you do not hear much about them in such cases you can tell the differences. They say if you play with fire you meant to get burnt. Is like wolf in sheep clothing, it is always good to embrace others ethnic cultures religions, but do not lie about your status or forge legal papers, eg(if the kittens were born in the barn you can't call them horses). So many of us who lived since many years abroad in the legal way is either Canadian Guyanese, or American Guyanese of naturalization and so on. I believe when a person lie it catches up on them later. They say one herring spoil the whole barrel, in wards they making it harder for other who are genunine, some people makes mistake in life but they do not always make the same, but when they do they never learnt from the past. Many of them hard of hearing and will never learn, so that is why when they leave over there, they have a hard time in other countries with the officials...stop the lies people don't make it bad for the others. I always tells my family to travel the legal way not by any means of fraudulent when leaving Guyana to enter US or CA or other. People must learn to respect the law not to break the law....I do hope I make some sense it is the fact...Barbados. Trinidad is not any better than Guyana, so why are they allowing themselves to be in such embrassing situation?? Sorry guys but I have been hearing too much about illegals recently being deported so I wanted to pen this note here on the comment section, stop being treated like aliens all the time you should be respected whenever travelling rather than have problems with the immigration. learn to respect the country laws and policies don't breach the law!!

Please note people that there is a difference in being deported and removed. Deport means don't come back, you've broken more than one law, Remove means you can come again and probably overstay like the last time, since that's probably the only law you broke. Your minister is lumping all the numbers together, she has no clue either.

I just don't get it. If people have so much bad to say about Barbados, and wish bad on it so much, then what really is the draw?

Barbados DOES NOT fancy itself atop any totem pole in relation to the rest of the West Indies. On the CONTRARY. Barbados, economically is in a precarious position and is trying what it can to do the best for its citizens. Why are all of you pretending to be deaf to this?

Furthermore, based on its geography position, if Barbados were to be hit with a category 5 hurricane, said hurricane would take out much of the Lesser Antillies as well. Is this the answer? Wish bad on the entire CARICOM b/c you disagree with the laws of one country? This is nonsensical.

I agree, that any repatriations must be done humanely. But, people are choosing not to leave, so they are being forcefully sent home. Right now, that is part of the path that Barbados needs to take to ensure its future based on economics right now.

While you all in here bad-mouthing Barbados, who is posting on the failed hydropower, the possible owenership of Guyana forest to England? Roger Khan? Lusignan????

Who in here that can open their mouths to wish bad on Barbados is doing anything concerning what is going on right right now in Guyana?????

You wish your neighbors house to fall, what do you wish for yourselves that is good and positive and uplifting?

Serious question, because everyday Bajans wishing positive things will happen for Guyana so Guyanese don't have to come illegally to get mistreated by business owners and landlords. You feel people like to see fellow human beings living in squalor for $10 Barbados a day wage??? Hell no! But while you bashing Thompson, who among you will leave your nice homes and come and give Guyana a chance to rise and to help its people out of poverty and gain the skills they need to be the best in life.

What GOD wunna serving, man?? GOD Bless Barbados and GOD Bless Guyana. And I mean that seriously!

HE IS A POLITICIAN --- POLITICIANS (EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM) LIE YEAR AFTER YEAR. THIS IS WHAT THEY DO. I PERSONALLY KNOW OF 18 PEOPLE WHO ARE BACK IN GUYANA WITHOUT A JOB AND EXPERIENCING DEPRESSION SINCE MOST OF THEM NO LONGER HAVE FAMILY THERE. THIS JUST KEEPS GETTING WORSE, AND WHO SUFFERS FOR IT? THOSE WHO LEFT TO GET A JOB AND BE INDEPENDENT SO THAT THEY CAN HELP THEMSELVES. I GUESS THE CRIME RATE WILL CONTINUE TO EXCALETE IN GUYANA. LET US BE REALISTIC, THESE PEOPLE HAVE TO LIVE SOMEHOW AND THE FEW DOLLARS THEY WENT HOME WITH ARE NOT GOING TO LAST MUCH LONGER AND THE RENT HAS TO BE PAID. MAY GOD PROVIDE FOR THEIR NEEDS AS HE PROVIDES FOR YOURS AND MINE.

You have left Guyana & still have a revenge mindset ?

Blame outwardly & Revenge are the only two things that I have seen all Guyana nationals have in common having read through all the comments on this thread no matter where in the world.

To most Bajans that is a foreign mindset that won't be welcomed.

Barbados is not only a tourist destination, but at the core we value 'the rule of law' very seriously & will not be deterred by any such blame outwardly & revenge tactics.

Sorry Sanderson, but I feel compelled to always set the record straight even if no one is listening !

Ahem .. let us bring some finality to this discussion. The bajans want illegal guyanese out of their country and it is their right to do so since they are part of the 'underground' community and might be doing one of two things. Breaking the law which is obvious and impacting their social services to which they are not entitled, and their may be some trouble makers in the bunch. But then again, if they are breaking the law they should be dealt with through the justice system. To make raids at people's homes at 3 a.m which the PM admits to doing is an injustice irrespective of their 'crime'. On the other hand, guyanese have made significant contributions to Barbados e.g. the construction and sugar industries. The challenge, not unlike the US, is to find 'middle ground' where a systematic and judicious compromise could be found to whatever extent possible find a fair and reasonable solution. This will not be easy. If you are illegal, give you time to get your affairs in order and leave the country. If you have needed skills and have made a contribution to bim and your 'nose is clean' give them a work permit. On the other hand, what would happen if other CARICOM countries take retaliatory steps towards Barbadians elsewhere in the caribbean ? This would make a mockery of the empty rhetoric of 'free movement of caribben peoples under the CSME and the entire CARICOM would suffer and a wave of protectionism would sweep the caribbean. Guyana and other caribbean business entities can refuse to allow barbadian businesses to invest in their countries. What the Bardians fail to remember is that Guyana holds the largest land mass of all the caribbean territories and presents much more room for development than any of them other 'two-bit' islands .. nuff said !!

Ahem .. let us bring some finality to this discussion. The bajans want illegal guyanese out of their country and it is their right to do so since they are part of the ‘underground’ community and might be doing one of two things. Breaking the law which is obvious and impacting their social services to which they are not entitled, and their may be some trouble makers in the bunch. But then again, if they are breaking the law they should be dealt with through the justice system. To make raids at people’s homes at 3 a.m which the PM admits to doing is an injustice irrespective of their ‘crime’. On the other hand, guyanese have made significant contributions to Barbados e.g. the construction and sugar industries. The challenge, not unlike the US, is to find ‘middle ground’ where a systematic and judicious compromise could be found to whatever extent possible find a fair and reasonable solution. This will not be easy. If you are illegal, give you time to get your affairs in order and leave the country. If you have needed skills and have made a contribution to bim and your ‘nose is clean’ give them a work permit. On the other hand, what would happen if other CARICOM countries take retaliatory steps towards Barbadians elsewhere in the caribbean ? This would make a mockery of the empty rhetoric of ‘free movement of caribben peoples under the CSME and the entire CARICOM would suffer and a wave of protectionism would sweep the caribbean. Guyana and other caribbean business entities can refuse to allow barbadian businesses to invest in their countries. What the Bardians fail to remember is that Guyana holds the largest land mass of all the caribbean territories and presents much more room for development than any of them other ‘two-bit’ islands .. nuff said !!

What guyana really needs is a "yes we can" man in the driver's seat. We are so blesed by God with resources that its a sin the condition in which we find ourselves. What ever happened to hydropower? and does anyone recall Brazil's attempt in the 70's th bring us on board with ethanol? since the price of sugar is not all that why not put the canefields to producing fuel? This technology has not only made Brazil self suficient but they are major exporters of the stuff instead of drink and drive drive with the drink. This would also create many jobs. Hungry unemployed people should vote with their bellies.

Though i aggree that laws should be enforced they should be in a humane way. These predators take everything you've slaved for and then dump you with nothing using the law as a bedraggled fig leaf. and that after exploiting and underpaying you to the max. Some are turned back at port of entry, minus whatever cash they have of course. They should remember that life is a cycle and it would only take one category 5 hurricane to send those Barbarians back to the stone age. which is obviously where they belong.

The response from the health minister is typical of his government's attitude towards immigration. Speaking of shortage in recourses to deal with the growing demand on their health sector, when failing to realise that nurses from the same countries they are victimising, are the ones helping to overcome the shortage in this and other areas. They can learn from the experiences of Trinidad in the 70's and 80's who benefited a lot from the migration of highly qualified Guyanese, and statistics shows while a small percentage remained, the majority moved onto the larger developed countries, mainly because they wanted to provide better opportunities for their off spring and these small islands couldn't provide such. This issue is one of political policies "gone wrong". The vindictive and callous way, in which this process was executed, can have some far reaching effect to this island’s future growth, by deturing rather than attracting the skills it needs. We expats (generally retirees)are only attracted to your island in the sun for one reason. Take a look at what is happening in the EU. Britain for example has opened its doors to many migrant workers. I hope this issue, and his policies; serve as a lesson to Mr Thompson, his political career and his position as a Caricom statesman.

X-GDF-Officer that is my tune too - I said it earlier when this started. I also see it as a failure of the so-called 'Caricom'.
GT WOMAN - I am with you 100% - I said that before also - because how in a very small island so many illegals are allowed to stay and work??

If Guyanese can make valuable contribution to any society,
Why cant they make it to Guyana?
If so, they would'nt leave Guyana.

To All Guyanese, Why run away from guyana? Why don't you all get together and do something in Guyana to make it better. Other countries look at the bad source that is the cause to the economic situation and they do something about it. Why run? You are going to be rejected from other countries if y'all keep running and fulling up the people country. Now you see how Barbados is running things, those illegals should go back home and make Guyana a better place. Guyana is many times larger than Barbados and we do have valuable resources. Guyana Government need to look at why its people are running away and do something about it. Open up jobs for the people.Make Guyana a better place for its people. Isn't that the reason Guyanese voters voted y'all in.

When all the Guyanese are send home, let's see if Barbados will be any better than it's today????? If Guyanese are taking their medications and jobs. The president of Guyana need to do a better job in creating jobs and the polices need to control the crimes then Guyanese will return to Guyana willing! Guyana is a beautiful country!!!!! People are scare to return........if you got money then the bandit will kill you for it and if you are poor you can't make it to survive. I’m not being a hypocrite....I don't live in Guyana at present but if these problems that I mention above are fixed...I’ll be one of the first to return home. Guyana has the best weather, no wars, beautiful beaches and the most wonderful/helpful people. Hospitality, we don't need to be abuse by other country and their nationals. To all the criminals in Guyana....come on lets make Guyana the country it can be!!!
