The Guyana government yesterday condemned the removal of Honduran President Manuel Zelaya after a military coup and called for his early reinstatement.

In a statement, the government said that it was concerned at the breakdown of the constitutional order in Honduras, in accordance with the principles of democracy and the tenets of the Inter-American Democratic Charter. “The government is also concerned that the events in Honduras may jeopardise the democratic political institutional process and the legitimate exercise of power,” it added.

The government also joined in condemning all acts of violence and the detention of government ministers and urged their release.

The government added its support to the call for the convening of a Special Session of the Organisation of American States (OAS) General Assembly today for the purpose of taking appropriate decisions, in accordance with the OAS charter, international law and the provisions of the Inter-American Democratic Charter.

Meanwhile, the governing PPP also added its voice to the condemnation of the coup, noting that experience has shown that military coups often lead to bloodshed. The party called on governments in the region and beyond not to recognise the military regime and call for the immediate re-instalment of the democratically elected Zelaya government. “We extend our solidarity to the people of Honduras,” it said.

What is wrong with politicians these days that they can’t seem to keep their word to serve constitutionals terms and then quit? Do they feel they are this indispensible?

And what’s up with Chavez threatening to overthrow the coup leaders in Honduras? This man’s meddling in the internal affairs of a sovereign nation can only make matters worse!

    • yasuman71 UNITED STATES says:

Andy, what can a president accomplish in four years/one term? The US Constitution provides for two terms. Honduran President Manuel Zelaya was simply holding a poll to see whether voters agreed with the idea of two terms instead of the current suffocating one. That poll would have been a democratic instrument to plan for constitutional change. The putschists are the same kind of military top brass who ran a dictatorship in Honduras for the equivalent of many electoral terms.

  2. BORAPORK CANADA says:

If you don’t want these steps to be taken do not become elected dictatorships. Democracy is more than holding elections every 4 or 5 years and then using referenda to prolong your rule.

  3. Satish UNITED KINGDOM says:

The item title confuses us by telling us:
    Govt, PPP condemn Honduras coup

THE PPP HAS GOT NOTHING TO DO WITH THE CONDEMNATION.
The fact that the PPP is in power is incidental and superfluous. The GOVERNMENT REPRESENTS ALL OF GUYANA and therefore therefore the title should just read:
    Govt condemns Honduras coup

Having said that: THE GOVERNMENT SHOULD NOT BE CONDEMNING ANYTHING!
Guyana does not have any foreign clout and even countries like China who DO HAVE CLOUT only get into CONDEMMINGS when there is a vested interest for them.

Prudence and not cat-calling should be the order of the day for the Guyana Government.

Moderator’s note: The PPP issued a separate statement condemning the coup.
