Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson ordered a 44-year-old food vendor to keep the peace after he pleaded guilty to simple larceny when he appeared in the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court on Friday.

On June 23, at Georgetown, Gavin Reid of 193 Charlotte Street stole items valued $150,100 from Caroline Perry.

The defendant told the court that he was sorry for his actions and that he had returned the items to the virtual complainant (VC).

The VC told the court that on the day in question she had left her office for lunch and upon her return noticed that her handbag was missing. Upon investigating, Perry said, her co-workers told her that a strange man was seen in the building where she works. As investigations continued, the VC said, the defendant was caught and the stolen items had been recovered, less $6,000.

In his defence, Reid further apologised to the court. He explained that he sells corn and had no money to buy same and was driven to steal. “I know I was wrong and will not do it again,” the defendant said.

However, Police Corporal Munilall Seetaram said the defendant is not a first time offender for similar charges.

The VC then requested that the charges against Reid be dropped since she no longer wished to pursue the matter.

The unrepresented Reid was subsequently placed on a bond to keep the peace for two years.
