Eighty-five-year-old former radio broadcaster, Patricia Cameron, better known as ‘Aunty Pat’, will be cremated on Monday in the US following her death in a US hospital on Tuesday.
Cameron, whose voice was one of the best known on the local airwaves for some four decades before she migrated, had suffered a ruptured brain aneurysm. She was placed on a respirator which was removed last week and while she was breathing on her own she was said to be brain dead.
Last week Stabroek News had spoken to Ron Robinson, a veteran broadcaster himself, who had worked with Aunty Pat for many years and he had recalled that she was “the aunty” of many, even those who were older than her. Robinson had related that she was an aunty to him and Vic Insanally in their early years of broadcasting. She had a popular radio programme titled ‘A visit with Patricia’ on which she did features.
“She is the finest female broadcaster the Caribbean has every produced,” Robinson had stated.
Cameron worked alongside another iconic female broadcaster, Olga Lopes-Seale also known as ‘Aunty Olga’, who now lives in Barbados.
Apart from being a broadcaster Aunty Pat was also an actress and had performed at the Theatre Guild.
Cameron leaves to mourn her three children, Gail, Dianne and Christopher.
