Sanderson Rowe. It could be a long wait by the telephone. Barbados, nor no other Caribbean Island, does not own a single boat as big as any ferry in Guyana.

Barat Jagdeo state that he “finds it strange that Canada would accept refugees from Guyana and then want to send back people to a country that generates refugees.”

A response from Sargeant;
Now I’m not sure if the folks on these pages recognize the significance of those remarks but Jagdeo is admitting that citizens from his country apply and are applying for permission to reside in Canada as refugees. One would ask what reasons are they providing for their claims, according to the Geneva Convention a refugee is classified as the following “A refugee is a person who “owing to a well-founded fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group, or political opinion, is outside the country of his nationality, and is unable to or, owing to such fear, is unwilling to avail himself of the protection of that country…”

Do the citizens of Guyana who apply for refugee status in Canada fall into those categories or are they “economic refugees” just trying to get a better life? When Forbes Burnham was leading the Guyanese Gov’t many Guyanese of East Indian descent applied for refugee status in Canada on the grounds of “political persecution and violence”; somehow I don’t think that Jagdeo is talking about 20/25 years ago when he speaks about Canada acceptance of Guyanese refugees; he is speaking in today’s context. Apart from Cubans and Haitians I don’t think that citizens of any other “Caribbean” country apply for refugee status in any country.

This leaves me to conclude that if the reason provided is political persecution/race/social group then Jagdeo has made a tacit admission as to the veracity of the McDougall Report? Of course some applicants lie and the reason may be purely economic, which is more reason for Jagdeo to hop on his soap box and decry the immigration crack down announced by the Barbados Gov’t. since his citizens will avail themselves of any and all opportunities to flee for a better life.

In any event Jagdeo with the assistance of the other political leaders/columnists and regional mandarins both current and former e.g. Bourne/ Ramphal will try to pressure the Barbados Gov’t but his pouting will have no bearing on the Canadian Gov’t.

Korean... I don't know WHAT you can say to your fellow Guyanese to get them to pay attention to the problems in Guyana at all.

All on SN, the hottest discussions are about immigration and Barbados and almost no one discussing all the killings, failed industry news, accidents and failed social services.

Why is that? Seriously, how can so much people who say they love their homeland come on SN and totally IGNORE 90% of the news on this site?

I am not Guyanese, but I read most of the regional online newspapers to keep up with the region. And I have NEVER seen a people so willing to be blind to what is going on in their country yet so vitriolic towards others.

Please, help me to understand why that is and what Guyanese home and overseas can do to stop being so short-sighted and do something positive for wunna country.

Why Jagdeo don't apologise for the mismanagement of Guyana?

Apologise for Lusignan, apologise for all those women killed by their reputed husbands, apologise for those children who had to go to India to take operations, apologise to the families of those people dead from diarrhea... oh no, all a wunna DEAD silent on what gine on in Guyana! Why???

But got big mouth to talk on Barbados. A crying SHAME how wunna does get on and everyday people getting shot, chop, murder, corruption rampant and death-squads on the march. Carry recording equipment at the next murder scene in Guyana and tell me the people want an apology from Barbados before they want justice for their loved one.

SHAME ON YOU! Apologise for casting a bad eye at your neighbor when you house in disrepair. Who you voting for next election anyhow?

Sanderson, See how they had hompson on the defensive?. Trust me they will not wait on Barbadians to employ them those who are legal will employ their own. Who is to determine how many domestics the Gt people who are legal can have. If they try to regularise , descriminate or stop the GT folks that creating this new problem will start their anti Barbdos campaign again.
If Barbados try to regularise them through monitoring, public ins titutions etc they will bribe the officials and corrupt them.

Great that's all Bim needs... more unskilled workers.

I hope Guyana accepts an equal amount of domestic workers to its shores as well.

Sure looks this way,Debra. Antigua and Barbuda was sensible enough not to sign on.But after all of the bad blood and unfair severe criticism of Barbados and its people by many in the last few weeks, who for a Bajan in his/her right mind would trust a Guyanese maid in her house far less her kitchen. They may be able to come freely, but that does not mean that they will find employment. And again, if they come here as maids, they cannot or should not be employed in other disciplines. I am sure that we will hear from other Caricom Leaders on how those arrangement will work.

This Guy Social Scientist never ceases to amaze me.Now he wants an apology from the Prime Minister and people of Barbados.
It would make a good start if these bright sparks sitting comfortably with full bellies over and away would start using these blogs to make some positive suggestions toward the betterment of their own country, instead of trying to score cheap points talking a load of crap, to put it mildly.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I am under the impression that the only people allowed free movement around Caricom are University Graduates,Artiste, Musicians,Nurses, and now Domestics. As far as I know it does not cater for the Technicans and Artisans unless there are holders of specified qualifications.

Obviously ,Henry Paul ,you have not seen the position of Barbados in the 2009 listing as a preferred destination.
Of course when Cuba opens up, there will be a rush there. MacDonalds opened a branch here some years ago,it knocked KFC and Chefette for six.The roads leading to McDonald were grid locked for a couple of weeks. The novelty wore off and it was quickly closed down. Get the picture?
Instead of wishing bad for Barbados and criticising its every move, why not look for ways that your country can reap some benefits from tourism.

I would like to support any resolution of unity amongst the nations of the Caribbean. And yes, while Guyana is in South America and it will make sense to forge relationships with our South American neighbors, the truth is that very few Guyanese speak another language, thus the link to the Islands.
Guyana has spoken as any nation should, on the mistreatment of Guyanese in the region, and I expect the Guyanese at home to hold the Leaders of all parties accountable for the mess that prevails in Guyana. If there is no dignity at home how can we demand it abroad. In a previous blog, I made mention of the failed and failing industries that has lead to great migration. Guyana must confront and deal with all its ills to make it a viable entity in the region again. Politicians and other Lords of the land will not effect change, they only enact laws, and many times only to protect their money and their status. The people of Guyana must bring about that change. Start at racial harmony or economic integration or any other area. I do not like to dwell on the past, but Guyana's is so checkered that unless we revisit it and learn from it, we might find it difficult to move forward. We have been fooled for too long by the people who hold the Money Bag. Guyanese, we need to expose all and have them placed where they belong, even if it's our Brother, Sister, or other close relative. Get all those who took, stole, killed, raped, or whatever crime was committed, behind bars, or wherever the law deems necessary, and like they did in S.Africa, bring everything into the open, so that closure can be achieved and the Nation of Guyana will be a productive and strong nation again.

You seem to be encouraging visitors from Guyana to break the law of the host country. Yes, anyone is free to travel with audio and video equipment ---- but which country in the world will allow these equipments to be used in the immigration or customs areas. From your input, I would have to assume only Guyana. What a mess. What a shame. God help us.

Do you have an inferiority complex that prohibits you from competing with fellow Caricom nationals?

The good businessman will also be a patriotic one and will always hire the homie before the stranger. If it's a question of lower wages the market place reigns supreme.
