-even though complainant falls on knees and begs for him

At the Springlands Court yesterday, Magistrate Krishndat Persaud sentenced a labourer to six months imprisonment when he pleaded guilty to assaulting his wife even as the woman begged for him to be spared.

The court heard that on July 5 Rajendra Rajpaul, 28, of Queenstown, Corriverton unlawfully wounded Pamela Lachana, 31, and caused her actual bodily harm.

Police Prosecutor, Sergeant Michael Grant informed the court that Rajpaul and Lachana were consuming alcohol when an argument ensued between them. He said the man dealt the woman “several cuffs, kicks and lashes about her body, causing her to head to burst and her eyes to get black.”

The prosecutor said too that Rajpaul was always in the habit of beating his wife. He said too that the woman had made several reports to the police in the past and each time she went back and begged for him.

After the sentence was passed, Lachana in turn went down on her knees and begged the magistrate not to lock him up. Magistrate Persaud then asked her if she likes to be beaten and chided Rajpaul for his behaviour.

Asked what he had to say, Rajpaul told the magistrate he was sorry for beating up the woman but “me bin drunk and she get me vex.”

Meanwhile, an unemployed man, Leon Nazir of Rampoor, Corriverton pleaded not guilty to assaulting his wife, aged 32 and his 14-year-old stepdaughter on July 7. He is expected to return to court today.

Grant told the magistrate that Nazir went home at around 5 pm and a problem over money escalated. He said the man then started to beat the woman and her daughter.

They then reported the matter to the police and the man was subsequently arrested.

He pleaded not guilty and the matter would be heard again today

They were both probably drinking hard from a young age – and that must have killed a lot of their brain cells!
I don’t think either of them know any better – both the man and woman think that such behaviour is normal – he just said sorry so that the magistrate would be more lenient – she just begged for him because she doesn’t want her supply of alcohol to stop!
I wish I had a solution to this problem, but I think that even Einstein would be puzzled over this one!
