Commander of ‘B’ Division, George Vyphuis and other senior ranks entertained members of the Berbice media at a social gathering yesterday as part of the activities to observe the 170th anniversary of the Guyana Police Force.

Commander of ‘B’ Division, George Vyphuis (left) and senior ranks pose with some of the members of the media who attended the event.
The event was held at the divisional headquarter in New Amsterdam. In his brief welcome, the commander said “we consider members of the media our friends but sometimes friends always take things in their own way. We cannot fight you, you have your work to do; we have our work to do.”
The day was set aside so that members of the media and the police could “inter-link” and familiarize themselves. According to him it was “planned for some time and I think it was fitting to have it during our anniversary.”
He said too that he was “…looking forward for that cordial relationship between the media and the police. No way, no way in the world the two can go without each other. Sometimes you would be very hostile; sometimes you would be very good but that is your work.”
Further he told the media, “We can’t beg you to be good all the time…”
while expressing satisfaction that the two entities can maintain a good relationship.”
The commander said too that “no one is perfect and from time to time our work may be questionable but that does not take away from the fact that the police have to do their work,” pointing out that “if you look at our fingers they are not equal.”
The anniversary celebration continues early Sunday morning with a nine-mile fitness walk from Borlam Turn on the Corentyne to the Central Police Station in New Amsterdam.
There will also be a games day for ranks on July 26 at the Felix Austin Police College at Adventure, Corentyne.
Meanwhile, the commander was happy to say that the force rehabilitated a dilapidated bridge at Levi Dam, Angoy’s Avenue that connects Mount Sinai, a depressed area on the outskirts of NA. He said the condition of the bridge posed a difficulty for residents to traverse.

What a very nice gesture. It is important to note that although the two entities cannot always be on the same page, they can collaborate on some issues.
” We cannot fight you, you have your work to do; we have our work to do.”
Not totally true. The police do fight the media as they show clearly and sometimes forcefully that their presence is not welcome at on-site cases and when seeking interviews. However,
it is refreshing to see that at least one Commander has a
sensible attitude.
” Further he told the media, “We can’t beg you to be good all the time…”
Joke and must have been met with laughter.
Beg? It is the Media that beg the police to be good to them
and give them requested or solicited information.
Now on the COP himself.
He should hold a similar ‘get-together’ ….now !
Ahhhhhh what are we celebrating again?……….. Oh yea, it’s only an anniversary, I thought for a second it was an accomplishment.
Ah man here we go this fella will do anything to keep in the public’s spotlight.Grandstanding for attention, mark my words get out and do your job stop campaigning for the limelight.
wow, they learning the cons and pros, of what democracy is all about.
This is just a publicity stunt. When you try to interlink with the media you just want them to write nice things about you in the news. It is better to interlink with the community. Establish a more cooperative, courteous and professional relationship with the community. How is interlinking with the media going to help the community?
I am thinking along that same line. An East Indian lady was murdered at #59 village, Corentyne on Monday. Why no media coverage? Have the police arrested anyone? People are no longer safe. We need proper security. Come on Top Cop and Commander.
