The 16-year-old boy who allegedly caused the death of Lilowtie Persaud by dangerous driving was yesterday remanded to prison when he appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

It is alleged that on June 21 at Georgetown, the teen drove a motor car in a dangerous manner resulting in the death of Persaud.

He was not required to plead to the indictable charge of causing death by dangerous driving when it was read to him by the Acting Chief Magistrate.

The matter was called to the bench and a lengthy discussion ensued.

The 16-year-old had been initially placed before the courts to answer the charge of dangerous driving and was subsequently released on bail. Following the death of Persaud the teenager is now facing the indictable charge.

Additional charges of unlicensed driving, breach of insurance and failing to render assistance at the scene of the accident were also read to the young man by Magistrate Nyasha Williams-Hatmin.

The teen was remanded on all the charges read to him yesterday and he has to return to Court Seven on July 15.

According to reports, Persaud was struck down in front of her 194 Alexander Village home by the 16-year-old unlicensed driver. She had suffered severe head injuries following the accident which had crippled her from the neck down.

Persaud died on Monday in the Intensive Care Unit of the Georgetown Public Hospital.
