Three teachers from the Cyril Potter College of Education (CPCE) and a University of Guyana lecturer on Wednesday received certificates following their successful completion of the Online Teachers Training Programme.

Minister of Education Shaik Baksh noted that teacher motivation is a major challenge in the education system and he applauded the teachers for their hard work when conferring the certificates on them.

According to a press release from the Govern-ment Information Agency (GINA) the 50-hour programme will aid the teachers’ effectiveness. The awardees are Verbena Wilburg, Noella London and Kevaun Sears from CPCE and UG’s Kencil Banwarie. Their participation was made possible by the Organisation of American States (OAS). OAS representative Dennis Moses said the organisation was proud to help Guyana upgrade its education level for both students and teachers.

GINA said the programme compliments the ministry’s strategic plan of ensuring all secondary schools and 50% of primary schools are online over the next five years.

Baksh said government is funding this initiative to ensure that a large number of schools in all regions are equipped with computer libraries.

He also underscored the contribution of alumni to this endeavour.
GINA said the Diamond Secondary School currently has 25 computers and the ministry plans to train 100 more teachers in Information Technology delivery in Region Six, Georgetown and Linden, before the new school term begins.
