- Agri Ministry
The Ministry of Agriculture says that two fishing trawlers which were intercepted by the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Coast Guard on Saturday are not legally associated with fishing activities in Guyana.
In a statement yesterday the Department of Fisheries said too that the vessels have never been registered in Guyana.
The ministry said it is conducting an investigation to provide answers to other questions which may arise.
The department is said to be co-operating closely with the police and army.
A single round of ammo and two telescopic sights were found during a search by the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU), police and the army.
Meanwhile Stabroek News has been reliably informed that the vessels were also subject to a similar search in Trinidad and Tobago before arriving here.
Reliable sources told Stabroek News that this information was forwarded to local authorities and a subsequent search conducted. Meanwhile the captains of the vessels as well as a man on board one of them remain in police custody.
On Saturday the Coast Guard acting on a tip interdicted the MV Champagne, Davvy’s Boy and Lucky Lady II which were moored alongside Muneshwer’s wharf.
CANU and the police were called in and according to a GDF statement, following information that the vessels were involved in arms and ammunition smuggling, they were searched. The searches came up with the telescopic sights and the single round of ammo.
Stabroek News understands that the vessel belongs to a well-known fishing establishment.

I wonder who is guarding this arms `cache’. We have enough ammunition and fire power here to destroy Georgetown and many lives. I think this is a waste of limited resources.
this matter will soon become a non issue. the boats are for sale and this it’s their first voyage to Guyana. I suspect the fish company in question might have purchased them. the crew on board was hired by the seller to transport the vessels. im even skeptical of the one round that was found
The show continues, red rover red rover are you there?

“Stabroek News understands the vessel belongs to a well-known fishing establishment.” Is it possible to conduct an investigative report to ascertain the name of this ‘establishment’?
What nationality is the captain and the crew? There is definitely more questions than answers to this story.Anand Persaud please assign a seasoned repoter to do a follow up.Enquiring minds want to know.Intriguing high seas drama!!!
seize the boats and auction them to the public.
well dat will only happen if they are owned by someone who is not in favor wid de ppp.
Word out of Guyana is that this is not the case.
This will all get resolved quickly and the spy equipment will be returned to the owners because no law in Guyana prevents them from having fishing gear.
You drink too much ppp dictatorship soup. Seize trawler for this?
what is this high crime? This is worse than what Ramsammy, Jagdeo and the PPP have been accused of?
Sn shouldn’t the word intercepted be used instead of interdicted, in the dictionary interdicted mean to prohibit or forbid authoritatively[verb] [noun] an authoritive prohibition. while intercept means to stop or catch [a person, or thing] between his or it’s starting point or destination [noun]
Moderator’s note: Point taken. Interception was used in the opening paragraph and should have been there in place of interdiction.
I wonder if this was a Guyanese based company would his course of action be the same. Many of the boat accident ha happen before and I am not aware of any victim law suits.

This is just scratching the surface, the government needs to “drag” deeper to come up with a better catch. What surprises me is what took the government so long to realise that the fishing industry in Guyana is not all about fish and shrimps and then again it is so dumb to think that the government never knew about these operations.I might be wrong but the truth will always prevail.
