Heston Bostwick, who allegedly inflicted wounds to his chest one day after he turned himself into the police for questioning in relation to the Ministry of Health fire, remains in custody and the details of his wounding are still not clear.
The man’s attorney, Basil Williams, told Stabroek News yesterday that there have been no new developments in the matter and his client was still in police custody. Williams was unable to comment further at the time.
Last Thursday police announced that they were seeking well-known personalities Archie Poole and Bostwick as they could “assist” with a then undisclosed investigation. Crime Chief Seelall Persaud on Saturday said that police were holding Bostwick in connection with the fire at the Ministry of Health. Police, according to him, are also interested in Poole in relation to the same investigation. Up to press time last night Poole had not been located.
On Saturday Bostwick was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) with stab wounds to his chest. Nicola Bostwick, the man’s wife, told Stabroek News that police are suggesting that Bostwick broke a glass window and stabbed himself in the chest. A check at the hospital, she’d said, revealed that her husband sustained a few stab wounds in the chest area, and that one particularly deep wound took five stitches. She said the whole story was baffling, but reiterated that she would first need to speak with her husband. How Bostwick was able to wound himself in the presence of the police has not been explained thus far.
The woman was adamant that Bostwick is being targeted by the authorities. She said that he was at home on the night of the inferno at the ministry and that “he knew nothing about that”. According to her, he was made aware of what had happened while on the way to teach a class. She said that her husband decided to turn himself over to the police after the statement was issued about him and Poole. She said that he went in on Friday morning around 10 am with his attorney and was promptly detained.
The circumstances surrounding Bostwick’s wounding remain unclear. If reports are true and Bostwick had broken a glass window ranks stationed at Brickdam would have been able to hear the noise and intervene. When this view was put to Commissioner of Police Henry Greene yesterday afternoon he refused to comment and directed this newspaper to the force’s Public Relations Department.
“I believe the PR department issued a statement on that…I am not going to get involved. Speak to the PR department,” Greene said yesterday.
However, repeated efforts made to contact Ivelaw Whittaker, the police Public Relations Officer, were futile. Besides the press statement, in which police said they wanted Bostwick and Poole for questioning, and the statements made by Crime Chief Persaud police have said nothing else about the matter.
If the details are not clear why is SN publising this speculative nonsense. (Do we need to anser that question, folks ?). Let me give you a hint for n answer though : Ruff, ruff, no dog story today ?
Anyhow, relatives have to be prevented from giving food to those in custody…

For every high profile crime in Guyana there is always a person or persons who will fit the criteria and thus the blame will fall on him or her. Racial profiling by the police has dominated and corrupted all investigations which could have been solved had the police force (and now the army) not been politically injected. When will too much be enough? When will we see further than our noses and live as one for the sake of the generations to come? When will we realize that the politicians are killing us softly with their lies?
Believe it or, not sooner or later, Guyana will be at a cross road where there is no turning back and if something doesn’t happen to change our direction the inevitable will become reality…..

When someone is injured or killed while in police custody an impartial and outside body should investigate the circumstances. I think the Trinidad, Barbados or Jamaica police departments should do the investigation to give the appearance of fairness and not have the local jurisdiction investigating itself. The Guyanese police can render a reciprocal service to the other islands when their police departments have to be investigated. The local police is not trusted and the government should not wait for civil disobedience to occur before acting. Be proactive Jagdeo.

In most Canadian jurisdictions police do not normally investigate themselves. If the Montreal police shoots someone the investigation is done by the Securite du Quebec and when the Quebec or Laval police needs investigation the Montreal police renders that service. That’s how enlightened countries operate.

Well “biscuit” was allegedly poinsoned a few days ago, and for years the police has been playing judge, jury and exectioner with Guyanese being denied their basic, fundamental human rights to challenge their accuser(s) in court.
Meanwhile, as the PPP makes this an everyday habit, anyone notices the absence of PNC query? And whenever the PNC objects to anything at all, you notice how token and measured it is?
This is one for the history books, but most importantly, I hope that someone is making note of all these alleged deaths and injuries that occur in Guyana police custody. The PPP has, by far and beyond, outweighed the PNC in human rights abuses and Guyanese has by far, exceeded the limits of docility.

This is the similar modus operandus used in Cuba and China to instill fear and remain in power.If i had a patient, who is in police,come to me in the ER with alleged self inflicting stab wounds to the chest caused by broken glass with no visible cuts to the hand,i would become very suspicious.
I would then document it in the chart,inform the hospital administrator and the Commander of the precint verbally and subsequently in writing.

Stab himself! well that is possible but how many cases do we no of someone stabbing his/her self in the chest region. Had it been reported to be in the region of the stomach then that would seem more plausible. Something doesn’t seem right.
