-one admits third case in court

Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson on Monday ordered that two teenage boys, 17 and 13, who had been charged with separate incidents of larceny, be kept in police custody.

The thirteen-year-old had pleaded not guilty to larceny from the person charge while the 17-year-old had pleaded guilty to a similar charge at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

The thirteen-year-old denied that he stole a gold band, valued $59,000 from Devon Abrams on August 17.  He will make another court appearance on September 8.

Meanwhile, the 17-year-old boy had admitted that he stole a gold chain valued $120, 000 from Petula Anjay on August 27. He will make another court appearance on September 27.

Prosecutor Dennise Griffith had stated that “this is the fourth time for the year that he (the 17-year-old) is coming here for something like this.” The teen, however, said that it was “only the third time.” He said that he did snatch the chain from the woman’s neck but that as he was fleeing the scene another boy tripped him down and stole the chain. The prosecutor then informed the court that the chain was not recovered. Probation reports are expected to be prepared on the boys for the next court appearance.

At age 13 I was stealing mangoes, sugar cane, etc.
This is a combined result of a failed family unit, a failed community, and society at large.

Nevertheless, that he has the gumption to state that this is “only the third time” he is before the court suggests that he sees nothing wrong with stealing.

It’s too bad he won’t be given a few months community service/hard labour along with juvenile counseling to reconsider his choice of career, as sending him to Camp Street would be like an open scholarship for him.

These juveniles must be in counceling in a place for wayward children, miners should only be given ONE CHANCE. 17YRS and he broken the law 4 times what would become of him as an adult. He must be kept out of society and be DISCIPLINED. He must be kept until he learns a trade and qualified to be a responsible citizen. The laws in guyana is too SLAPPY. i CAN REMEMBER HEARING ABOUT MASARUNI BOY SCHOOL (or something like that) while growing up.There was also one for the girls. The Gov. should take these wayward children under their care because the poor parents gets the blame for not being able to HANDLE their unruley miners who give them SHAME.
IN MANY OF THESE CASES CHILDREN DO AWFUL THINKS FOR ATTENTION OTHERS ARE CASES OUT OF POVERTY AND FRUSTRATION. THESE ARE THE CRITICAL SITUATION WHERE THE INSTUTIONS MUST IN, THE PROBASION OFFICERSAND PARENTS TO SOLVE THE PROBLEMS OF THESE YOUTHS,gUIDANCE IS NEEDED OTHERWISE THE NEXT GENERATION WOULD CONSIST OF ONLY THIEVES, WHORES AND CRIMINALS, A STRICT HAND IS NECESSARY.
