Students of the Gordon Table Primary School, Mahaicony Creek were disappointed when they turned out on Tuesday to find that the doors were closed and there was no teacher.

A parent, Panday, told this newspaper that no one gave any explanation as to why the school was closed and the students had to return home.

He said the following day they returned as usual for school and the same thing happened.

According to him the headmaster went to the school on Tuesday morning and opened it briefly and left. He said about 37 students attend the school and along with the headmaster there was one other teacher.

Panday pointed out that the teacher got married over the school holiday and she left the area and apparently resigned from the job as well.

Regional Chairman of Region Five, Harrinarine Baldeo when contacted, told Stabroek News that that they were aware of the problem and were trying to make “alternative arrangements.”

He confirmed that the teacher got married and “left the job” while the headmaster was sick and had been hospitalized.

Regional Education Officer, Urlene Crandon who was also present when this newspaper contacted Baldeo at the launching of education month in the region, said that a former headmaster of the Mahaicony Primary School has agreed to take the job and is expected to start today.

For the two days of foolish non communication, the teachers should be sitting at desks, while the students lecture them on the virtues of humility, teaching values, and remind them of good manners.

The deterioration and lack of accountability, in all levels of the society continues to get worse.

This clearly, is not only a case of inefficiency and mismanagement, but indifference and callousness on the part of the authorities, since, no communication or apology was given to this community for the school being closed, and the evident negligence and failures of those responsible.

Unless, these communities protest the negligence and mismanagement of the administration; citizens rights, will continue to be abused and trampled on.
