Drug smuggler Shaheed Roger Khan was sentenced to 30 years imprisonment on charges of drug smuggling, witness tampering and gun possession in Vermont at 3 pm today at the US Eastern District Court in Brooklyn.

Justice Dora L. Irizarry, imposing the sentences after a one-hour summation, said that they would run concurrently, which means that Khan will only serve 15 years in prison.

Prior to handing down the long-awaited sentence, Justice Irizarry read three letters from Sheila Waddell, Harry Rampersaud and an anonymous person, which pleaded with her to impose a longer sentence than the 15 years offered to Khan as part of his plea bargain deal, given the heinous crimes he had committed. However she said that while she considered their pain and that of others affected by his operations, it should be recognized that in Khan’s case an acquittal was also possible had it gone to trial.

Prosecutor Shannon Jones had earlier said the same thing, noting that it should not be viewed as 15 years as opposed to 25 or 40 years, but 15 years as opposed to an acquittal.

Before imposing sentence, Justice Irizarry asked Khan to make a statement.

Standing, the cleanly-shaven convict smiled and waved to his family and relatives in the courtroom. Addressing the court, Khan apologized to the citizens of the United States of America for the pain his actions might have caused them. Turning to his family, he apologized to them as well for any pain he might have caused them. He did not as much as mention Guyana or Guyanese.

He then thanked his attorneys John Bergendahl and Diarmuid White for “being men of integrity” and said the US should be proud of them.

As he left the court, Khan waved to his wife who said “Rog, I love you.”

The courtroom was packed to capacity and no standees were allowed. Persons who arrived too late had to leave. (See more later.)

Well I am very happy with the sentense, the sooner he gets out the better, because I am one hundred percent certain that when he comes out if he survives the US prison system,(because he will be meeting some of his phantom friends in there)the government that will be in power at that time, weather it be pnc the favorite party of michael tannassee(the poor guy is obsessed) or whichever party,he will have to face the courts in Guyana for the murders that he was involved in,bearing in mind that he relied on others who had more guts than he did to be able to actually face the so called freedom fighters and others!

He is lucky? Would you like to be in his shoes? Do you know who he will be in prison with? His sentense will start, things will now change the trial is over, There is not enough money for him to be able to buy the friends he needs like he did in Guyana, those brothers will not betray each other in there for nothing,he now has the opportunity to show how good he is at taking out criminals, all you dreamers need to understand that his life is about to change,no ppp protection, not enough (drug) money,HE IS ON HIS OWN,with some of the worst FREEDOM FIGHTERS he has ever seen,ha ha ha he can help the prison system to get rid of the bad guys in there,ha ha ha ha ha ha!!

This is a wake up call for Guyana. RK is only one slice of the pie…..We must not allow our two main political parties to support notorious gangs. We have all seen the mayem that can result when our incompetent political parties decide to get dirty. After decades and decades of political interferance and coruption with the GPF and GDF these entities have lost all respect. I hope we can focus on building a highly efficient and dedicated security force which will play the main role in securing all Guyanese, We have to start looking ahead for the sake of our children.

The Guyana Government no longer has the credibility to effectively rule Guyana. With all this information in the US possession, it is almost tantamount to blackmail. The US now only has to suck their teeth and give a cut eye and watch some Government officials get on their hands and knees obeying like little puppies. For they know acting contrary will get them a prison term.

How can a Government end up like this?

You would imagine Saddam, Noriega and those people in this type of predicament.

Recall the US rejected the attempted reinstallation of Gajraj on the grounds of lawlessness. There are other Ministers whose visas were taken away

Shameless lot, they should do the decent thing and vacate office.

  7. coolieman UNITED STATES says:

Good that he apologized to the people of the USA and that he is paying the price, he will be out soon with good behavior, Sheila Waddell and those who wants to see RAJA spend his life in jail should consider why their wishes were not granted, maybe too much Guyanese were praying for him for the good he did by saving innocent Guyanese lives.

    • Cummins UNITED STATES says:

Coolieman, federal sentences require you serve every day of the time so no good behavior early release in this case. The trouble for Khan is that for murder one charges there is no statute of limitation. Those charges could still face him in the future even after he serves his 15years.He could very well never ever again see the road as a free man.
Khan real troubles might only now be starting and not ending. Sorry to take the wind out of your sail Coolieman

*sigh* …Well the case of Roger Khan provided lots to blog and speculate about Now that the case has come to an end, I can’t help but speculate about the buzz his release fifteen years from now will provide.

” Justice Irizarry read three letters from Sheila Waddell, Harry Rampersaud and an anonymous person, which pleaded with her to impose a longer sentence than the 15 years …”

I wonder if this judge took the time to do some investigation of her own. The two said names above I’m sure were innocent characters in the drama that was played out in Guyana. It’s highly likely they were involved, be it directly or indirectly with illicit activities that were being played out in Guyana. Apparently the judge didn’t think this was so. And I love how the letter from Anonymous was also read. It caps what most would argue was a case filled with holes and it started with the illegal abduction of Khan from Trinidad.
