A fire early this morning razed four Regent Street stores, the second such conflagration in ten days to hit businesses in the commercial district.
The origin of the inferno is unclear. Destroyed are Household Plus, Fullworths General Store, Chino’s Variety Store, and Wireless Connections, all located in three buildings between Cummings Street and Orange Walk, Bourda. The Fire Service was notified at about 3:45 am, Fire Chief Marlon Gentle told reporters.
The blaze started at Household Plus and by the time the Fire Service arrived, that building was fully engulfed and the servicemen focused on containing the flames at the other sites, he said. Firemen battled the inferno for over two hours before it was brought under control. Up to 9 this morning, they were quelling the remaining flames. Dozens of persons are believed to be out of work while millions of dollars in stock have been lost.
The fire follows another on October 9, which raced through Regent Street between Light and Albert streets, destroying three buildings and severely damaging another.

GPL ya’ll need to fix this issue quick.
It’s Not GPL!!
SNAP DRAGON……ITS NOT THE GPL…..ITS THE REBIRTH OF THE BURNHAMISM, TRYING TO CRIPPLE THE JAGDEO ADMINISTRATION…MORE THAN THIS IS EXPECTED
“Happy ! Me is..”
I hope that these fires are not part of any high- or low-level warfare against the political situation in our country. If they are, I unreservedly condemn those that are so engaged.
Re: “I hope that these fires are not part of any high- or low-level warfare against the political situation in our country…”
So, what are you doing in the country that is represented by the flag next to your name? Why not stay closer to the source if it hoped that “these fires are not part of any high- or low-level warfare” with the weapons being “Slow Fyah, Mo Fyah” and then we can get the first hand reports from you directly and not Video-less Stabroek News (SN).!
Please Carl,don’t go there!
Kaieteur Gold it’s saddening to see the number of idiots referring to the slang “Slow Fyah, Mo Fyah” as some prelude to arson.
Even the most simplest of persons know that “fire” is used figuratively in referring to turning up the pressure on something or someone.
How many songs have we heard with the words… hotta fire, more fire, fire-bun, etc. ?
Even the scriptures talk about people heaping coals upon their heads; about being purified by fire, etc….. what’s wrong with some of us man? Can’t we resist the urges to use inciting / polorising words at every turn?
Hahahaha Kaieteur Gold ya something else…how u gonna embarrass the man like duh????
Yo “LoveGT4Real”! Done you know that the word “fire” was used from ages immemorial; and, depending on whether you believe in a “creation” or a an “evolution”; and, you have read the Bible then you will know of the references by the “Creator” himself the “Their Works Will Be Tested By Fire”; so, figuratively; and, in as much as one may be yet to comprehend what was really meant by ““Slow Fyah, Mo Fyah” (you will have to find out and let us know); and, if you believe in the Bible; then, this pails in comparison to the “Fire and Brimstones” as predicted in the “bible”. And, you are there sitting comfortable on the beach in the TURKS AND CAICOS ISLANDS trying to portray history and the future to the world differently.
As was quoted in another comment a few days ago “Any Nation That Forgets Its Past Is Very Much Likely To Repeat The Same Mistakes Again.
Lest we forget the “Middle Passage and Circa 1939 – 1945″!
Btw, “LoveGT4Real”! What were the prelude(s) to arson(s) during Circa 1960’s and that which destroyed Congress Place in Circa 1970’s. And, is there any reason why you are here with your rantings and not letting the fire officials in Guyana do their work and report their findings to the press!!!
Goldfinger, I agree with you. Something is wrong with Carl. How can he be making such insinuations at this moment in time.
Carl reminds me of RK, create a story where there is none for his own agenda.
Hey “SandHurst First”, Hey “johnander”! It is quite certain that the following in part is still vivid in your minds:
Re: “Fahrenheit 9/11 is an award-winning and controversial 2004 documentary film by American filmmaker Michael Moore. The film takes a critical look at the presidency of George W. Bush, the War on Terrorism, and its coverage in the American news media. The film holds the record for highest box office receipts by a general release political film.[3]
In the film, Moore contends that American corporate media were “cheerleaders” for the 2003 invasion of Iraq and did not provide an accurate and objective analysis of the rationale for the war or the resulting casualties there. The film’s attack on the Bush administration generated much controversy around the time of the film’s release, including disputes over its accuracy. Moore has attempted to respond by documenting his sources….”
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fahrenheit_9/11
And, like the “American filmmaker Michael Moore” did, “Carl” ( in that he is “hope(ing) that these fires are not part of any high- or low-level warfare against the political situation” can (with his “Video Camera” etc, etc in hand) follow in the Michael Moore’s footsteps – only this time instead of America… it will be Guyana.
So, “SandHurst First”, it is not necessarily a question of “embarrass(ing) the man”… but one in of which one must be prepared to demonstrate the truth (facts) to the world.
And, as for “LoveGT4Real” – can you tell the world if there is any relationship (if any) between “Fahrenheit 9/11″ and “Slow Fyah, Mo Fyah”!
Kaieteur Gold, I hear you loud and clear, and I remain disturbed by folks who use the Mo fyah mantra to suggest that Desmond Hoyte was using it to advocate physical voilence against the PPP and it’s members.
That’s all I am saying, and yes I am enjoying the Turks & Caicos Islands but no my friend, it is never my intention to pervert history.
A tragic situation in a country that can least afford it. With such limited resources I wonder what’s the strategy for multiple simultaneous fires.
WAS IT ARSON?
Definitely not this!!!
I wonder who are the intellectual authors for these fires?
yall want know who behind de fires?,hahah ask de bacooo in kaieteur news,e know.
Where are those new fire trucks that Mr. Rohee was showing off the other day? This is like building schools with no teachers, hospitals with no medical care, and roads with no jobs.
This is more than suspicion
It is.
Hmmmmmmm….How coincidental…… that the second branch of household plus! was destroyed by fire within 2 weeks of each other…..
I am just so sorry that so many persons will also be out of a job!
MORE THAN coincidental!!!!!!!!!!!!!
SN I am disappointed that neither yesterday nor today your lead story is about the much-celebrated Diwali Festival in Guyana. At least it is not on your online newspaper and as a Guyanese I take umbrage to what I consider a very serious omission. Where are the motorcades, etc?
Moderator’s note: There are photographs of the motorcade in today’s edition and in yesterday’s.
Good observation, Touchau. I noted the same thing and having checked the SN homepage again tody, I STILL CANNOT FIND NEWS about Guyana’s Diwali Celebration.
Most readers would be interested especially in what happened at the Alexander Village Mandir.
After the Moderator’s note, I am still IN THE DARK :-(
That is good then, but some more prominence for your online readers would have been in order. We depend on you for this kind on information.
Satish, I drove pass there yesterday evening and I was pleased to see lots of police on every corner in Alexander Village. There were also moblle units deiving around. I am sure with all the police presence there was peace in the village and the villagers got to celebrate Diwali the way they should.
Satish, check Chronicle’s website for good news about the police-enforced peace of Diwali. Or you don’t read Chronicle as well? Odd…
Re: “That is good then, but some more prominence for your online readers would have been in order. We depend on you for this kind on information….”
What’s all the fuss about “Touchau”!!! I am still to see an headline of the Historic Swearing in of U. S. President Barack Obama in Stabroek News online edition (SN); and, better yet, to read about Canadian support for American troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. But, then again where will you have expressed your thoughts; or, what would have complained about if efforts to “silence” Stabroek News by a certain government administration had succeeded?
Touchau what contribution you Satish does make towards the upkeep of his news print. When you and Satish answer me a gone come around with the next question.
How many papers you folks reading outside of Guyana you can joke with…..some news print be it on line or off line some would not get a chance to red much less critique…….enjoy and read one of these days trust me SN can become very selective with who blog, so take it easy with papers. Just read and careful with what you say it may come back to bite you.
TOUCHAU…you should know by now that this news paper only publish negative issues about guyana….the good and positive things they dont publish…as for diwali…they dont care or probably they dont know of its real significance…however,I do enjoy reading the trash from those blogger who are trying to govern guyana from their ice box, rather than contributing something that will help a nation that is divided for decades, resulting in the progress that are being made to be hampered by looking for faults and criticizing every act of development that are being made by the govt.
I DO HOPE THAT S/N WILL PUBLISH MY BLOG…THEY DONT SEEM TO PUBLISH OPEN MINDED AND RELEVANT COMMENTS..
Satish, Hope you had a nice Diwali. You can view lovely Diwali floats, beautifully lit creations of what Diwlai means at a website called Guyana Live.Com. Things were fine in Alexander Village this holiday, thank goodness as I am from that area of Guyana. Have a nice day.
