I’m a man of few words. Who should we blame?
1.No proper investigation system
2.No proper water system
3.and the no can go on….

There is no system where, they can shift all the water power to a particular location because they are not following building codes. People building hotels in the cane field etc….

Where r we going? Regarding the fire, my thought is. Everyone wants a corner to build a bigger building…The last fire is just a block away, they have family members included. I can be dead wrong, but those are clues we all see on CSI, Etc….

The people of Guyana needs to come out and STAND AS ONE. Only then we’ll see real change and progress…Note I said the PEOPLE OF GUYANA.

to the folks that lost store, jobs…what can i can……hope them get through it.

Why blame the Government? The Fire Chief should make strong recommendations for Water Tenders to the Minister responsible for the Fire Department and follow up vigorously.Reference must be made of the fires of the past ten days.If we cannot learn from the past then we are a hopeless nation. The past is the foundation upon which the future is built.Please be informed the Water Tenders can be filled from the Demerara River at Low tide when the water is almost fresh if not fresh.

Ulric, the ‘mis’ is missing from your understanding. Read the reports in SN, KN and GC about the recent RHT fire. Plus many other fires over the years. Then we have a fire station without a fire engine!

And, it just shows that some people in Guyana have not been doing their jobs properly. It is either they know what they are doing or they don’t. Which is it!!!

Here’s an opportunity for rebuilding with upgrades. Buildings with coded electrical connections,tiered buildings, ample parking, modern facilities, make it better so it wouldn’t burn when GPL overloads the connections!

MXQ, why make reference to RHT fire station not having a fire truck? It is my understanding that bucket brigades work well in RHT. Just be sure that the buckets are not made in a certain Asian country. ISNM

WHAT GOOD IS A FIRE DEPARTMENT WITHOUT WATER? ISN’T THIS IRONIC THAT THE SO CALLED LAND OF MANY WATERS HAS NONE IN THE DAMNED PIPES? IN A PLACE WHERE THE BUILDINGS ARE SO CLOSE TOGETHER, WHAT ELSE CAN ONE EXPECT? THE GOVERNMENT IN THIS COUNTRY IS BECOMING A BIGGER JOKE EVERY SINGLE DAY, AND THE WORSE PART IS THAT THE SAME PEOPLE WHO ARE PUNISHING ARE GOING TO VOTE AND PUT THESE PEOPLE BACK IN OFFICE. Satish, I lived in the south England city of Southampton for a year and along one of the most popular shopping areas the businesses are packed nose to tail with NO FIRE BREAKS. Of course, their fire protection & safety is of the highest standard. And their building are mostly bricks and stone. So you do have a point. But the lack of functional hydrants in GT is the main issue.

So, which U. S. Aircraft Carrier does not have “expertly trained fire-fighting” naval personnel aboard!!!

Is this another lame excuse for an inept Guyana government which also lacks foresight. But then again, there is only so much having “boy scouts” (for an army) can do. What if there were “terrorists” (home grown as well as foreign), riots…. in Guyana. Then the entire city can easily be flattened.

I strongly beleive that the fire is a deliberate act and needs to be investigated. Come on guyana land of many waters this is beginning to sound embrassing. What would the outer world think of us. There should be a standard distance for fire hydrons in the city.Nobody appears to know this distance.Someone in the Building Department should use their brain if they have one,and secure copies of the 2006-07 South Florida Building Code, The International Building Code,Plumbing, Electrical (NEC Code), Mechanaical,Fuel and Gas codes, ADA codes(disabilities), FHA codes (Fair Housing Act),Fire and Life Safety.These codes are applicable in the Caribbean, so I cannot see why they will not be adequate for Guyana.

Guyana is replete with tumbledown old wooden buildings.All over the cities.Rat and roach infested, unsafe to the point of junk.However, a good lot are inhabited as businesses or residencies.Many were built with lax code compliance, and as codes are updated, life safety and old equipment still used were not.In effect the city is left with buildings containing outdated electrical wiring, AC ductwork, new patchwork wiring to accomodate new electrical heavier loads,decaying wooden walls inside and outside, and leaking roofs from rusted zinc sheets.Basically, what you have here, are traps about to be ignited at any time.These old wooden buildings in Guyana must be inspected by Building Control for up to date certificate of occupancy compliance,regarding all recent building,electrical, plumbing, and mechanical instalations done. Those not up to code compliance must be either remodeled to comply with the present Building Code, or demolished.
