A painter, who allegedly relieved a man of his gold chain while the man was attempting to stop a fight, was yesterday placed on a two-year bond to keep the peace  and ordered to pay  $5,000 in court cost when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrate Court.

Jason Wickham of Bent Street, Wortmanville, entered a not guilty plea to the charge of larceny from the person when Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson read it to him.

He is accused of stealing a gold chain valued $200,000 from Devon Phoenix on October 18 at Camp Street.

A short while after the charge was read to Wickham, Phoenix indicated to the court that he did not wish to proceed with the case stating that he had received $120,000 from Wickham as compensation for the chain.

Meanwhile, Wickham, who appeared remorseful, apologized to Phoenix stating, “ah sorry about de incident, it was a fight yah (Phoenix) deh parting and it is unfortunate wah happen to you.”

Phoenix explained to the court that on the day of the incident he was attempting to stop a fight that was occurring between Wickham’s friend and another man, when Wickham approached him with a glass bottle that he used to hit him in his head and afterwards relieved him of the gold chain. Wickham who appeared relieved was escorted out of the court by a police officer.
