Six days after he was held, Nouravie ‘Navin’ Wilfred remained in custody yesterday even as police probed allegations that he is among a trio that was tortured at the Leonora Police Station.

Wilfred, 20, was held along with Deonarine Rafick and a 15-year-old boy for questioning after last week’s murder of ex-Region Three vice-chairman Ramenauth Bisram. In a statement last evening, the police force said that its Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) continued with investigations “into the alleged use of excessive force on prisoners by members of the Police Force.”

The police said statements have been acquired from two additional victims, other than the teenaged victim, who claimed that they were beaten by police ranks during the investigation into Bisram’s murder.

In addition statements have been taken from 16 police ranks and two civilians. Medical reports have been uplifted for two of the alleged victims and the investigations are proceeding apace. Charges are expected to be laid shortly, the police declared.

Rafick was charged with the murder on Friday and during his court appearance displayed signs of a beating and had a gaping wound to his head which required stitches. He alleged torture. The next day, it was revealed that the teen bore horrific burns to his genitals and surrounding parts of his body and his attorney also said that he was beaten. He remains hospitalized at the Georgetown Public Hospital.

Two detectives, who were part of the investigating team, have since been held in custody by the police following media reports.

No charges have been laid against Wilfred but relatives, who yesterday voiced their concern, said they are unable to hire a lawyer.

Meanwhile, Rafick’s relatives said that his eyes remained black and blue and swollen. They visited him in the prison yesterday and left after mid-day and up to that time he had not yet seen a doctor. They said that he complained of pain in his feet, head and teeth but tried to “bear up” as he did not want them to be worried about him.

The relative said that the prison authorities had promised to take Rafick to the hospital but up to the time she left yesterday, this had not been done and she was unable to confirm if they later took him.

These TORURED prisoners are suffering from mental trauma and should not be further subjected to interrogation by the police.

The Guyana Human Rights agency is the only legitimate organization that can conduct a credible probe.

The Guyana government [PPP] is doubling down by shutting out human rights organizations in an attempt to control the outcome of the investigation.

What about the G.D.F. ranks who were brutalized during the search for the AK 47s? This recent act is the result of the deafening silence of most, while they suffered.

    • Anmol Sharma CANADA says:

Sorry Bismattie. Inaccurate, inappropriate and irresponsible statement that “State sanction Torture”. The Officers who committed these acts “cross the line”. This is a colonial method passed on to the police and army and remained to this day and age in the 21st century not only in Guyana but in other countries where the British ruled.

I don’t blame you Reddy for not posting your real thoughts about the torture of the child. So confine your comments to attacking the messenger, SN. It’s safer. It brings to mind a quote (Hackett could look up the author) “it is far far better and much safer to firmly anchor in nonsense than to put out on the troubled seas of thought”. Get it?

    • Georgie UNITED STATES says:

Sharma ! Stop the nonsense about colonial police and torture. There was no need for torture in such times as there was less brutal crimes as compared to present. The colonials stressed ‘investigation’. The subjects of colonialism adhered to law and order. Enough of your nonsense !

Yaaaawn. Let the police carry out its investigations. Here wha happen on the so called “serious” paper SN that making the (sensationalist) National Inquierer look like the New York Times: Two or three people (some with multiple names) dem with an anti-governmernt agenda hogging up the posts thinking they gon make an impact on what’s going on in Guyana and logging on ten or or so times per day to see who is who reply to who…
I don’t even read most of them anymore…Too much singing “Me is so happpy me is…” on them and I in Barbados enjoying myself with the good life knowing that Guyana in caring and capable hands with this government…Peace…

  2. A. Forde BARBADOS says:

The police in Guyana have to realize that regardless,if these individuals are suspects, everyone has rights, they are not yours to brutalize, or torture, in the international arena the police force in Guyana is deemed to have no human rights or respect for prisoners, but God is watching, and what you sow you will reap. I am so ashamed right now of my country’s police force.

I DO HOPE THIS CASE GETS THE ATTENTION OF THE UN; OBVIOUSLY BAKWARD GUYANA DOES NOT HAVE ANY REGARD FOR THE CIVIL RIGHTS OF ITS CITIZENS. IF THEY DID, WOULD SOMEBODY PLEASE EXPLAIN THE EXTENT OF THIS TURTURE? I HAVE SEEN THE PICTURES AND I AM SURE THE INJURIES ARE EVEN WORSE IF I WERE TO SEE THE SUSPECTS WHO HAVE ENDURE DAYS OF TORTURE IN A POLICE STATION. DOES THE POLICE HAVE ANY REAL EVIDENCE IN THIS CASE? IF SO, I DOUBT THEY WOULD BE GRASPING LIKE THEY ARE. IN THEIR QUEST TO AVOID THIS FROM BEING ANOTHER UNSOLVED MURDER, THEY HAVE BEEN GRABBING AT ANYONE AND ANYTHING AND LOOK AT THE RESULT. ITS TIME LIKE THIS I AM SO ASHAMED TO BE A GUYANESE AND FOR THE POLICE OFFICERS WHO DID THIS, ONE IS GOING TO SAY THE OTHER ONE DID IT — FORGET WHAT THE ACTUAL VICTIMS SAY, THIS SO CALLED “INQUIRY” WOULD NOT RESULT IN ANYTHING SUBSTANTIAL; THIS IS ALL TOO FAMILIAR. GUYANA NEEDS A COMPLETE CLEANSING —
