– call for Greene to resign

Outraged at the most recent allegations of police torture involving a 15-year-old boy, representatives of Red Thread, Grassroots Women Across Race and the Working People’s Alliance (WPA) yesterday staged a picketing exercise while calling for the resignation of Police Com-missioner Henry Greene.

Some of the picketers gathered at the corners of Camp and Young streets yesterday afternoon.

Some of the picketers gathered at the corners of Camp and Young streets yesterday afternoon.

The picketers, who had originally planned to protest in front of the Commission-er’s Office, were prevented from doing so by police officers and were not allowed beyond the barricades set up at Camp and Young streets.  The picketers, nevertheless, gathered at this corner and conducted their picketing exercise. There were barricades also set up further along Young Street with a strong police presence.  As they gathered they also distributed flyers stating their concern on the matter.

Co-ordinator of Red Thread Karen De Souza said that the purpose of the picketing exercise was to show how disgusted they were that a 15-year-old could be maltreated in such a manner at a police station.

She said that the group had attempted to meet the commissioner to express their concerns but it is clear that he does not want to speak with them.  De Souza said that “the Police Force is out of control and that “he [Greene] must do the right thing and demit office”.

De Souza, who carried a poster bearing some cabinet members and with the front page photo carried in Saturday’s edition of Kaieteur News attached, stated that her placard was significant. “They are all guilty,” she said, referring to the Cabinet members.  She pointed out that up to the time of the protest yesterday afternoon, they were yet to hear an official response from a government official.

When asked if she expected the parliamentary opposition to bring the matter before the National Assembly once more, she said that this made little difference since the government used its majority to protect its own interests. Last year, a motion brought before the National Assembly by the PNCR-1G calling for the state to honour its obligations under the UN Convention against Torture and set up an independent inquiry into allegations of torture by the joint services was defeated.

Chairman of the WPA Desmond Trotman said representatives from the party were participating in the protest as concerned citizens.  He said the latest atrocity concerning the 15-year-old boy is an “abomination”. He said that they were not only protesting this case but all others where similar treatment was meted out. Trotman said “enough is enough” and added that all concerned Guyanese should come out and demand answers from the government.

According to Trotman, the matter has now gotten out of hand since the government did not seek “to rein them in earlier”.

The party Chairman also criticised the Commissioner of Police who he said had failed to conduct his duties properly.

Seems as though the WPA is awakening and returning to the glory days when they lead! What took you so long? It had to take the abuse of children to move you? Walter has to be crying shame on you…but it is better late than never. Up the ante…don’t relent…keep the fire burning…People’s Power No Dictator!

The Guyanese people are apathetic and deserve the government they have. They are spineless and lack motivation. Sad situation.

Totally agree with Borapork, the people will not stand united against the government.
They see the color of skin to run the Government than the ability.
They made their beds and now they must lie on it.

    • from the outside CANADA says:

Please be aware that no group of people deserve the government that the Guyanese have now. Guyanese are not spineless and unmotivated as you so observe from your safe, privileged home in Canada. Perhaps instead, Guyanese are worn out and overwhelmed by continually living crushed under the foot of a budding dictatorship. Basic survivalism and the daily struggle to make it one day to the next, coupled with fear and intimidation tactics is why Guyanese people are not able to stand up and speak out. Perhaps support for your countrymen and women rather than criticism of them would be more useful. Perhaps calling out the atrocities you read about from this government and naming names and wrongdoings from the safety of your home (a privilege not guaranteed in GT) would be more effective.

Yes!!!!, this is what I was speaking about, take it to the streets, not only for these lads, but all those who were hurt while in these foolices care until court dates, they cannot/must not think they are above the law, their jobs are to serve and protect, their jobs are to investigate properly, who ever is/are found to be responsible for this murder, should be charged, protected while awaiting a court date.

I cried and cried and could’nt blog the day I read it, I am still mad as hell.

All citizens who are not working, should turn out in full force, this should be the last, I saw the entire picture of this lad in yesterday’s KN, what a shame, his legs, abdomen and private area are burned, with large areas having third degree burns, they had to set him alight while his pants was on.

Commissioner of police Mr. Green, you must resign forthwith, all those involved and those on the premises at the station on that day must be fired forthwith, charged,no bail given, place in the nasty, smelly lockups at Brickdam Station and taken to court, they must received nothing less than 25 years, with hard labor.

No wonder the US took away your visa Mr. Green.

Look what Guyana has become, a country of nit wits, where is the moral humane actions towards prisoners?, the GDF is the next, let them also be given psychological test before admittance to defend this Country.

Mr. Rohee, you are to be blamed also for this, place your phone down and join the picketers on the streets.

Mr. President, we need to hear from you, ur responsible for our brothers and sisters, don’t fly out of the Country as u usually does.

Mr. Sam Hinds, where are you?, u also needs to speak out concerning these crimes.

We need to see pics of these criminal foolices.

This is an amerindian desendant, a child of a native guyanese, I am still to hear a comment from the Amerindian Affairs Minister.
I viewed the newscast on channel 7, it was devastating seeing this native woman weeping because she is poor and wondering to know if her child would ever recover from the trauma and the scars left by this incident. I wept for thsi lady and her child, a native of this country treated and humiliated in the worst possible way one could have imagine.
I hope the home affairs deal with the corrupt cops and they are charged and place before the courts.
Continue your protest and I hope that all the international and diplomatic agencies and organisations, and also the religious bodies have taken note of this.
The Roman Catholid Diocease has issued statement with this regard, I I hope all the others will follow suit.
    What a shame………………..
