– upgrade plans announced at 40th anniversary cocktail
The Pegasus Hotel is celebrating 40 years of existence and under new management has started a series of extensive upgrades as it looks to become the first ‘green’ hotel in this part of the world.
The hotel held a series of activities including a recent cocktail to celebrate the milestone in its history.
Chairman Robert Badal, who took over the reins in May last year told the gathering at the cocktail on Wednesday that the hotel has witnessed many changes in its 40 years of service to the country’s political, economic and social landscape, as many of the events giving rise to those changes took place on the property.
Badal remarked that since taking over leadership of the company he outlined several upgrade plans with little appreciation for the level of analysis, reviews and discussion required. Notwithstanding the challenges posed by the unavailability of the right level of local expertise, he said, progress has been made in the back office areas of the hotel along with an enhanced security system with the construction of a 10ft concrete fence on the seawall perimeter of the property.
Further Badal pointed out that a new Finance and Administration office is under construction which would release an additional 10 rooms on the first floor of the Tower Block, currently used for office.
Further the hotel has purchased a new boiler and improvements have been made to its air conditioning systems. Proposals have been received to renew the electrical, plumbing and air conditioning pipes on the Tower Block.
Badal also disclosed that as part of the upgrade, the hotel has purchased a new reservation and management information system in order to improve guest services as well as management reporting and control.
Work is also to commence shortly on its current pool bar with a new multi- storey, trendy sports bar. A new two-storey gym with more professional equipment and a body treatment area is to replace the current gym. He said too that the popular Latino Bar will be the hotel’s new wine bar with an extensive collection of wines.
Browne’s café, the shopping arcade and banquets are also to undergo a facelift with new equipment and services.
Badal said too that the hotel’s rooms shall soon have fine 100% cotton linen, environmentally friendly amenities and equipment on par with those of the international luxury brands in the Caribbean, the Americas and Europe.
However, to support the upgrades and ensure the highest standard of service is delivered, he said, top-of-the-line trainers would be invited to train staff.
He told the gathering that plans are also in store for the hotel to forge alliances with international tour operators.

A nice hotel with a lovely atmosphere. This type of investment is long overdue. Though unique in its own way, this hotel is far from being the 5 star hotel status it’s claiming to be, it’s more in keeping with a 3 or at best a 4 star international hotel.
Based on my stay at the Pegasus and other international 5 star hotels, it is my opinion that the property is no more than a 3 star rating.
Pegsus is definitely a 3 star hotel, based on my stay about a year ago, but I am glad of the thrust, going green is good, and the new trend is doing that.
I wish the new owners the best, I am always glad to see local entrepreneurs doing well.
Congratulations to Mr. Robert Badal for being the first Guyanese to own an International Hotel with an International brand name.
With all his other successful operations such as PopEyes, Guyana Stockfeeds Ltd, the Rice Mill, Chicken hatchery etc. he has now join the league of Peter D’Aguiar and Yesu Persaud.
Most importantly, Mr. Badal never inherited anything but started from scratch and does everything legally and above board.
It should be noted Mr. Badal is a Chartered Accountant and possesses an MBA and is a very humble human being.
“Most importantly, Mr. Badal never inherited anything but started from scratch and does everything legally and above board.” DOES THIS MEAN WHAT I THINK IT IS STATING? Naaaaaaaaa! It is just an optical illusion. My eyes are gone!
Wait, my grandson tells me that I read it correctly.
Good heaven, what is his secret to success? Perhaps he can share that with the rest of the people who are planning to flee Guyana because there are no opportunities. Good for Badal.
did it ever occcur to you that making a fortune in guyana if not from inheritance is impossible. the last man to build a hotel in south ruimveldt and invited the american ambassador th president and other digniteries ended up in prison when he came to America. he is still in prison. what happened to that hotel ?
Balwant, one correction. He is a ‘Chartered Certified Accountant’ not Chartered Accountant.
Yes, a very good direction to move in and i applaud the new management for their foresight. However, what does it mean to be ‘green’? Yes, installing more energy efficient appliances and amenities is a step in the right direction, but are we just jumping on a bandwagon to nowhere. Maybe investments should be made into offsetting all the emissions associated with operating this hotel (and i am not talking about the hot air that tends to be expelled by managers and directors) before we call it a ‘green’ facility. This would demonstrate the company’s commitment to reducing their ecological footprint and show that this is not simply an exercise in green-washing their image.
By going green, this hotel and its’ private entrepreneur would have clearly made a full-scale direct and indirect ecological footprint. The direct footprint would be that the hotel has upgraded it’s core emitters and indirectly’ by help promoting the scaling up of such investments in the hotel sector and wider services’ sector as a whole.
Going green is just for the Americans to go stay there, smart move!
Good news now I do not have to go to Thailand to find an affordable five star hotel.
Sharda ! Maybe you have checked out the Signature Suites at MGM Grand , Las Vegas.
Congradulations on your new post;
From Denise D’Aguiar’s lips, now I see why in the western world we are so sarcastic, this hotel is going green, give me a break, Guyana is a country that is green, with all the naturals resources green, further more Guyana does not need to be in competition with the western world.
Guyana is in a league on it’s own world map for our natural resources, even when travelling to Guyana all you hear is the people in disbelief seeing all that natural untouched firgin land, flying over looking at all the green forestry.
In Canada we need green space features due to cold winter months, SOLAR is what Guyana needs we have all the green you will want or need.
My People of Guyana don’t let theses individuals feed you with there nonsense.
what ever. Guyanese were always green. We eat healthy greens, our meats are reared by eating greens not chemicals, so you are just trying to sound good, by trying to be foreign.
It is a sales gimmick.
Dey should tell the President, unless he move quick on criminal elements, Guyana is changing from green to red(peoples blood). And dat doan cause people to come to Guyana.
Robert Badal, may I remind you Guyana was always a country which used only all natural no chemicals in our foods we grow vegetable and other foods. So don’t you dare act like you are bringing some new idea to Guyana and the Guyanese people. Just go ahead and paint the hotel “GREEEN.”
I am very happy to hear of the recent changes.
Twenty five years ago I was a Night Auditor for that Hotel under THF hotels. I still remember the good days and can forsee the potential of that hotel. Today I am still in the hotel business where I am a Regional Controller overseeing 15 hotels. I would like to visit one day and see the Hotel which I was accustomed seeing.
Good Luck and all the sucess.
BAD GIRL YOU TELL THEM, YOU ARE SO RIGHT, BUT CYD WAKE UP YOU LIVE IN CANADA, HOW MANY SHOOTINGS ARE HAPPENING HERE EVERY W-END IN EAST END AND WEST END, EVERY W-END, TELL THE GUYANESE PEOPLE THE TRUTH, IT IS NOT PERFECT HERE.
GROW UP, I AM SO TIRED OF THESE GUYANESE PEOPLE ALWAYS PUTTING GUYANA DOWN.
