According to a Government Information Agency (GINA) press release, after making his presentation to the president earlier this week Akyol said that the cooperative agreement signed by Guyana and Turkey in 2005 is the framework for engagements between the two countries during his tenure. He said Turkey will be able to grant assistance to Guyana in areas including disaster prevention, industry and tourism. Akyol said his country has developed an excellent tourism product and is willing to impart the knowledge garnered from their experiences to Guyana.

“Turkey is a full-fledged tourist economy. We are having every year more than [twenty to twenty-two] million people coming in our country.

I know Guyana has plenty of possibilities and potential,” he said. “To work on this issue (tourism), you have to support the infrastructure, the logistics and the training in this field which is a very specific area of expertise,” the Ambassador added.

Akyol said too Turkey’s education sector can benefit from its relationship with Guyana. “I know Guyana is strong in the education field. You have a good, well-organized base on that so probably those exchanges could be beneficial to my country. We would be happy to learn about your success,” he said.

Akyol is a life-long diplomat who has served in the Turkish Foreign Service since 1974. He has represented his country at the European Community directorate, the United Nations Office in New York and the embassy in Zaire during 1980 to 1984 (Zaire was renamed the Democratic Republic of Congo in 1997).

The Turkish ambassador was born in Ankara in 1947 and has a graduate degree in social sciences from Ankara University and a post-graduate degree from Nancy University in France. He speaks French and English, along with his native Turkish.

Turkey is a capital of the human trafficking trade, part of its “tourism”.

Wonder if we have similarities to that and other trades?

This will be a good venture for guyana’s tourism sector, but i hope the heads don’t claim sovereignty when the turks want to implement their brand of tourism to guyana.

Certainly Guyana has possibilities for tourism and anything else, however what kind of tourism can we expect when there is no end to the constant blackout? Right there is a reason so many seats on the planes are empty right now. And after being robbed at gunpoint, some people will never go back to Guyana. They came there for what they thought would be a nice vacation because it is cold over here, instead some of them end up dead and the others were in constant blackout — that is when most of the roberies take place in Georgetown especially. Guyana does not have the beaches or hotels compared to Barbados (of course the backbone of Barbados’ economy is tourism), so I don’t see much happening in Guyana. There are so many reasons why people including myself just go up to Barbados for a vacation. The situation in Guyana does not encourage us to come home, and our co-workers will never go again, after the horrible experiences they had there. Sad, but true.

This tourism talking is a bigger joke. Guyana needs a serious house cleaning in order to be taken serious. Who will want to come to Guyana to see all the garbage throughout the country. Clean your house before thinking of inviting people.

We have to start some where. If we can get a kick in the rear end to get our tourism going, why not? We will Guyana must accept what ever little the get in the form of tourism revenue. We have a long way to go in our hospitality training. In the mean time half of loaf is better than none. PEACE.
