The Rotary Club of Stabroek, Georgetown advanced its literacy project  in Region Five two Saturdays ago to help youths with learning difficulties, the club said in a news release on Friday.

At present, Region Five has 14 literacy sites spanning from Belladrum to Rosignol and collectively serves an average of 200 youths per week.   Each site is run by a volunteer teacher who coordinates and implements project activities.

Stabroek Rotarians last Saturday were exposed to the instruction model at the  Ithaca site, led by volunteer teacher Utende Grant, the release said.

The club’s sports and literacy initiative  commenced in March 2007 with 50  youths in Buxton and its environs.  And current enrolment in this project is over 300 while the demand is increasing.

The release said further that the success of this project has propelled the club to expand its literacy initiative to areas of need, targeting vulnerable children who have limited access to extra tuition.

Rotary International champions literacy as a means to sustainable human development and the Rotary Club of Stabroek is demonstrating its commitment to fulfilling this mission through its ongoing support for literacy initiatives.

The club has been assisting the projects  through the provision of  books, teaching aids and  stationery, as well as financial and moral support, the release added.
