The foundation is being laid for a $77.7M secondary school at Sand Creek in South Central, Rupununi, Region Nine and the facility is expected to benefit over 700 students when completed.

Minister of Amerindian Affairs Pauline Sukhai and a team during a recent visit to the Deep South and Central Rupununi toured the construction site, the Government Information Agency (GINA) reported.

Minister Sukhai said the completion of the school in South Central Rupununi will ensure greater accessibility to secondary education, and she also expressed satisfaction at the pace of the project.

“We are aiming to complete the construction on target, which is within eight months,” she is quoted as saying.

The project is being undertaken by private contractor, Ivor Alleyne and is being monitored by the Education Ministry.

Consultant Noel James,  giving an update about the project, said that the  two-storey building will have 15 classrooms, 2 laboratories, an administrative office, a teachers’ quarters, Home Economics and Industrial Arts Divisions and a computer room.

And the building will be furnished by the Education Ministry, GINA added.
In recent years, several secondary schools were built in hinterland communities including in Regions One, Seven, Eight and Nine.

The administration over the years has increased its budgetary allocation for education from $1B in 1992 to $20.4B this year. Local scholarships and training programmes have also been provided, particularly to hinterland communities.
