Three-year-old Rani Lall who was struck down by a vehicle belonging to the Guyana Prison Service last Tuesday, died yesterday in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH).
When Stabroek News visited the hospital yesterday, the child’s parents and other family members had gathered around and expressed disbelief at her passing. The mood was somber.
Lall, who had suffered severe head injuries in the accident, had remained in a critical and unconscious condition up to the time of her passing.
She leaves to mourn her parents and three older siblings. Her inconsolable mother is currently pregnant.
According to reports, Lall and her older sister, Mariah Paul, were on the pedestrian crossing attempting to cross over to the northern side of the Mon Repos highway when the accident occurred. They were going to attend a religious function at a relative’s home.
Mariah, 11, said that they were on the pedestrian crossing on the southern side of the highway and were about to cross to a relative’s house on the northern side of the road.
According to her, a vehicle proceeding east along the highway stopped and signalled them to cross. It was while crossing the road; the girls were struck by the driver of the Prison Service vehicle, which had licence plate number PLL 6005.
The driver was reportedly intoxicated at the time of the accident. Relatives said that he was taken into police custody following the accident.

The recipe for a protect is here again.A government vehicle assumed employees of the government….hit a child …and she died.Amnesty should be aware too..
really sad!
It very sad to read any news about Guyana. Guyana have a serious management proble.
Something is wrong with management of Guyana….this child could of be an Engineer, a Doctor or a law maker.
I feel for the family…..was the Prison van in that of a hurry. Everybody drive in so much speed in Guyana to go where. That van could not be late for court.
Guyane need to have stop lights, this beautiful young girl had to die so early.
we have traffic lights, where this happened was a rural area.
Do you have limit?
look at this
and them is sad i hope u will never get back at a wheel again
I hope the driver’s licence is suspended permanently! and he doesnt escape a death by dangerous driving charge
THIS DRIVER SHOULD BE SLAPPED WITH DUI, VEHICULAR HOMOCIDE, SUSPENDED LICENSE & TO STAND ALL FUNERAL EXPENSES & COMPENSATE THE FAMILY OF THIS KID. REMEMBER THAT OTHER SIBLING WAS INJURED TOO… dem think dem above d law., these are the ones should be dealt with teh most severe penalties there is so that this will be an example to the others in these areas/field…
may her soul rest in peace…
what a shame. here we have a good driver who actually stop his car to make sure these children cross correctly and a drunk who came along and just messed that up. i pray that little angel is looking down on us and his happy as ever. my prayers go out to the family and friends.
Give that driver a long long Busman’s holiday.
May her soul rest in peace.
