A body believed to be that of 23-year-old Aliya Bulkan who plunged off the Kaieteur Falls on Saturday morning was spotted yesterday and efforts are to be made today for search teams to retrieve it.
Sources last evening said the body was seen floating in a pond at the bottom of the falls but because the area gets dark very early efforts to reach the area had to be abandoned. Stabroek News understands that specialist officers from the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) journeyed to the area yesterday and were split into two teams, one at the top of the falls and another at the bottom.
It was the team at the bottom that reportedly sighted the body with the aid of binoculars and relayed the information to the team above.
Army Chief of Staff, Commodore Gary Best would only confirm that the army was participating in the search, adding that he had received unconfirmed reports that a body was spotted.
The family was still awaiting confirmation of the identity of the body.
A Korean woman who was part of the tour party had witnessed Aliya running and screaming and then plunging off the waterfall.
Aliya only recently graduated from a US university and relatives said that they found it difficult to believe that she ended her life since she was not depressed. The only problem she had, according to her relatives, was not securing a job. She recently returned home.

so beautiful and so young, why would she commit suicide?….
Who knows what this girl was experiencing and keeping to herself — From all appearances, this was an educated woman with a bright future, yet she chose to end her life in such a horrible manner. May her young soul rest in peace and my condolences go out to her family.
Which University did she attended in America?
Sand Hurst, according to early reports she attended Stoneybrook University in Long Island New York
dubaiciti. I don’t want to sound insensitive, but I think you do not fully understand the meaning of the word “Educated.”
You followed the story from the very inception and yet you do not know which university she attended. It cannot get more incredible than that. Keep it it up.
S.F. depression can have an impact on how you feel.It can occur any time in your life.
Well it seems the obvious is about to be confirmed. Finality is upon this grieving family and to them I extend my sincere condolences. Someone so pretty and intelligent has departed in full bloom of her youth. Paradise’s gain is Guyana’s loss.
Let me see….
Top 10 Universities in the World…
1 Harvard University, USA
2 Yale University, USA
3 University of Cambridge, UK
4 University of Oxford, UK
5 California Institute of Technology, USA
6 Imperial College London, UK
7 University College London, UK
8 The University of Chicago, USA
9 Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA
10 Columbia University, USA
Well I can imagine…she didn’t attend any of these places…I would have done the same thing if I couldn’t get a good job in Guyana on America or if my father was loaded….THE SAME THING I WOULD HAVE DONE!!
Today you realize the beauty, the other day you said “suicide, end of story” like you got schizophrenia or wa budday?
SandHurst, how about York University and U of T of Toronto Canada? These two are among the best also…….. but what does this have to do with anything??
Not everyone can handle the pressures of life. And it was reported in another newspaper that she was introvert, not having an outlet, she did what she thought was the best and only thing to do.
Im glad her body was found though, it will bring closure to her family and friends.
Well Sue,with the recent recession they had in the US, it would have been very hard for her to get a job because of the university she attended. Some people leave Guyana and travel to the U.S, Canada or the U.K to go to a university that makes no sense, comes back to Guyana and behaving like if they attended Harvard and want to get the best jobs.
At least with the body located, a funeral can take place and the family have some closure. RIP Aliya.
y only d Korean c and hear and no 1 l hear she screaming
because they were close to her than the others.
..because of the rising sun….Koreans believe that the run rises in the east and sets on the west….in the interior…Kaieteur is on the west…lol
Is it not remarkable, that the sound of a scream is universally recognizable? A translator is certainly not required. I hope that the body that was reportedly spotted by the military is that of the late Aliya Bulkan. This will certainly commence a process of closure to the Bulkan’s. May her soul find peace…
Rinaldo, the sound that come from the tumbling waters of the falls can be deafening. It is possible that the Korean being the closest to her could have heard her screams while the others could have only hear the roar of Kaieteur.
could she have been frighten by some sort of creature, like a snake?
good question, and the answer is yes she could have.
However, the most primitive human survival instinct would have compelled her (in a split second) to choose a path that preserves and not endangers life.
Condolences go out to the family. Its such a tragedy that we lost such a brilliant young lady. May her soul rest in peace.
A sad Moment for the family!! …….. To all who read, it’s not the problems you face in life the defines you but the way you handle them…. Be strong, hold on, Life is better than Death!!!!!
Death is simply a completion of the cycle of life my friend. We are all beings of light, we come from the spirit world and enters a human body so that we can experience life’s sensations on this physical plane.
When we die, we simply discard our human physical shell, which is really non stuff and return back to the cosmic source of our eternal existance, where time and space has no meaning to the spirit.
Aliya is now sailing on every summer breeze. She is skipping over the ocean like a storm.
Joe.
Joe,
U mek me wanna jump 2. U mek death sound so beautiful.
Najbar,
Those are very kind words.
Joe
Well said but I’m in no rush to sail the cosmos. Blackout nights in Guyana offers a good view of the heavens for now.
It look like you had a dead like experienced.
Army, death is a beautiful thing. In some societies they mourn when a child is born and rejoice when someone dies.
Joe
not NEWS, a day late.
BIAS TO THE CORE.
Propaganda press with Bias Moderators; thats SN for yu.
SN you should know and not believe, on benschop radio last night it was reported by dale andrews that her body was found, so sn you are late.
Don’t you people have anything good to debate… SN is a newspaper not an online news service. Breaking news is all that will make it onto the site the day before (how else would the newspapers sell).
Amen-ra, why u picking on SN… every other newspapers reported the same story
inez i’m picking on sn because they should know the facts and not tell me they believe, i don’t go on belief.
CFO stated yesterday afternoon on this blog that the body was found but that would have been because the news was circulating in Guyana – SN and the other newspaper would have had to wait for today’s edition.
This is very sad indeed. My sympathy goes out to the Bulkan family and all those during this sad moment. This is a calling on all of us as intelligent people; please think before you act, for your act may have a range of consequences not only on yourselves but others as well. People with sadden thoughts like Aliyah, you should understand that you will gain ANYTHING by ending your lives; there is more to live ! First of all, think about the struggles you’ve gone through in life and then try to understand that a problem or an issue that is propelling you to commit such an act is only for a short while. We have to think intelligently here and YES we all make a difference in this world and you ARE VERY important to society and people around you as a whole. So think twice before you even let that part of your mind control you. You know it’s very deplorable that we let our minds or little thoughts in our heads. Let the brain parse it first. Another way to help is to talk to people about your problems; a lot of people are willing hear you out. Please my brothers and sisters if you know someone who is having thoughts like Aliyah’s, please help them or point them to someone who will help.
All that you say was nice and true, but only the people in that situation know what it is like. I am sure everyone had a bad day, where they think there is just no answer to this problem today.
But not everyone can deal with it, not even if you attended the best of university.
I will share my story soon…. lets see how many will be interested and will have answers.
Prayerfully, the body is that of Aliya and the family can now have some privacy and closure to this tragic situation!!!!
There is only some info coming out. The only thing i can think of from what info was out is that the woman was suffering from DEPRESSSION..
May her soul rest in peace & may GOD comfort her family…
