Four farmers whose watermelon farms are located close to the Number 63 Beach are in custody following the killing of a 16-year-old lad on Sunday but so far police have not been able to make any headway.

Vivian Singh Balrup

Vivian Singh Balrup of Reliance, East Canje was in the company of a female friend, Susan Hernandez, 15, when he reportedly picked a watermelon from a farm and shared it with her.

They were both later attacked by an irate farmer. A police source said that while no information regarding the incident has been forthcoming from the farmers, the police are hoping to make a breakthrough very soon.

Balrup sustained several hits to the back of his head which left a gaping wound that bled profusely while Susan sustained gashes on her forehead and other areas.

They were rushed to the emergency unit of the New Amsterdam Hospital and Hernandez was treated and sent away but Balrup succumbed while arrangements were being made to transfer him to the Georgetown Hospital.

In a press release, the police said investigations revealed that Balrup and Hernandez of New Amsterdam were with friends at the beach and Balrup had reportedly picked the fruit.

Later, while Balrup and Hernandez were walking along the beach they were attacked by a man armed with a length of bamboo who dealt lashes to both students, after which he escaped, according to the release.

  1. A culture of violence is alive and well in Guyana . I therefore , would like to opine that guyanese have a propensity for violence . The senseless killings continue , unabated . A young man lose his life for a watermelon – so very tragic !!

    • dubaiciti UNITED STATES says:

I agree, and the reality is that it seems to be getting worse because so many of us seem to have absolutely no regard for human life. This is the kind of thing that makes me wonder what next can I expect from my homeland?

    • Sue CANADA says:

Mr Wiggins & dubaiciti, violence is in every corner of this world… Guyana is no exception. That being said, I am not excusing it. Violence is unacceptable……. we are a civilized society and should live in a civil manner….

    • Ginger56 (There's No Place Like Home) UNITED STATES says:

Yes, these senseless killings are just that, senseless. Look at yesterday’s news about the 26 year old mentally challenged woman that was apparently rape and then murdered. Oh my God! This is just heartless!! What, Guyana no longer has caring men…or are most them on drugs? What morals judgments do they have? However, I see this evil has transcended from nation to nations, countries, villages, towns, communities, etc. Where are we headed people?

    • light-hearted UNITED STATES says:

Wiggins is your doctor out of date? You are talking senseless.

  2. dubaiciti UNITED STATES says:

I do hope these people are going to be held responsible for taking the life of a child and for what? a simple watermelon; this is most disturbing, who among us (as children) did not climb a fence or a tree to get a fruit? This is not about whether or not taking the damned fruit was wrong, it is about what we as a civilized society should not tolerate. To this child’s parents, you have my condolences and may his young soul rest in peace. I pray I never find out what it feels like to bury my child; it must be heartbreaking. I know you are hurting and grieving, but please do not let this go or allow anyone to pay you off (which I know happens sometimes). Your child’s life has NO price and it should not be taken likely. How in the world does a human being inflict this kind of brutality on another because of a fruit? What in God’s name is this world coming to, I shiver to think of the example we adults are showing the next generation.

  8. Concerned UNITED KINGDOM says:

This is appalling, even if he stole the melon, is it worth a death penalty? this is outrageous; he was 16 years old. I personally hope that the farmers responsible are held for murder and face life with no parole. I can imagine the age difference and whether they had children or not around the same age, it is unacceptable and they should face the full arm of the law.

R.I.P and may the family find some form of closure though it may be hard to move on from this and gather strength through(for once) justice in Guyana.

  9. alex GUYANA says:

It is such a sad thing to read . some people are just illetrate here in guyana.

  10. Lance Smith UNITED STATES says:

Sad story indeed. However, isn’t a thief a thief, and the farmer should face the music also.

    • ghetto youth GUYANA says:

Lance, I grew up in the country area, where on moon lit nights and some days when no one was at home , boys which I was included, we climb the neighbour trees and steal fruits, genip, guava, mangoes, star apples, golden apples, ect.
Someone being killed for a watermelon……………come on Lance, I agree he had no right doing that but not to get so voilent to take a life. He was jsut probably trying to impress the young lady, who eventually sustain injuries also. The young lady can identify these people to the police and I hope she does.
