Woman prime suspect in septic tank murder

A post-mortem examination (PME) reveal-ed that Kanniah, 41, of Number 78 Village, Corriverton died as a result of “stab wounds to the chest with protrusion of the lungs,” pathologist, Dr Vivikanand Brijmohan said.

The doctor said too that the decomposed body also had “muddy deposits in the airwaves.”

Kanniah was buried yesterday shortly after the conclusion of the PME.

Reports are that his nude body was dumped in the septic tank, along with a mattress, sheet and pillow, after he was fatally stabbed some time between Thursday night and Friday morning.

The man’s sister, Savita Kanniah told Stabroek News that her brother who provided a service of spraying grass with pesticide for a living, left home around 6.30 am on Thursday to attend to his work.

After he left, she said, the woman with whom he shared a relationship went to look for him. He returned as she was leaving and the two went out together. Savita said that was the last time she saw her brother alive.

Although he did not return home, she said, she was not worried as he would normally spend two days at the woman’s house.

Therefore, on Sunday morning she was shocked when she received a telephone call from the police stating that a body believed to be that of her brother was in the woman’s yard.

She said when she got there she was looking around in the yard for the body only to discover that undertakers were removing it from the septic tank.

She said the badly decomposed state of her brother prevented her from venturing closer but she was nevertheless able to identify his remains. “It was hard but God gave me the faith to look at it…” she said.

Savita said her brother and the woman used to have problems and his siblings would always discourage him from continuing the relationship but he never listened.

A close friend of the man told this newspaper that he saw Kanniah and the woman who is reportedly a “drug-addict” on the road together around 2 pm on Thursday and later that evening they were seen at Reno Disco “sporting”.

He said on Sunday morning he received a call from another friend who had learnt that the man was killed and thrown into the septic tank. He subsequently contacted the police and accompanied them to the scene.

“When we checked we saw a lot of flies from a pipe on the septic tank and the smell was very strong,” he said. There was also a bloody trail leading from the house. It also appeared as though efforts were made to wipe the blood.

He said several pieces of board were packed on top of one of the covers of the cesspit and after they were removed and the cover lifted, the gruesome discovery was made.

The friend said it appeared as though Kanniah was killed in a bedroom in the house which also had bloodstains. The mattress, sheet and pillow were missing from the bed.

A police source said the woman became the prime suspect because she had reportedly told persons on Friday morning that she “kill a man”. She has not been seen since then.
