Chaos broke out in a section of Wellington Street yesterday after a fuming Chinese national who operates a store accused two women of shoplifting, kicking one and tearing the top of another and receiving     a few slaps to her face. following a chase The storeowner and one of the women were arrested.

It was just before lunch yesterday that the incident occurred and as a large crowd gathered many were heard saying that the two women had indeed shoplifted a few items from New Age Trading Company located on Wellington Street next door to CNS Channel 6 and opposite Payless Variety Store.

The dispute grabbed the attention of shoppers and passersby as the Chinese women, struggling to speak English, walked alongside a woman pointing at her bag and accusing her of having a stolen item in it. The woman was heard urging the storeowner to stop following her.

As she continued walking away, the storeowner grabbed at the woman and her bag and a scuffle broke out between them. The female storeowner put a few kicks in the accused shoplifter and received a few slaps in return. Onlookers then parted them and urged the accused shoplifter to go her way before the police picked her up.

Holding on to her ear in pain, the determined storeowner walked back to the store where another accused shoplifter was being arrested by police who were on patrol and had stopped. The angry storeowner grabbed the woman, tearing her clothes even though the police tried to stop her. A male Chinese shouted at the police officer who was fully dressed with a black helmet, to leave the store and leave his wife alone. The policeman stood motionless for a few seconds, seemingly lost at what was occurring. However, he told the storeowner to go into the police vehicle along with the woman she had assaulted.

While some onlookers laughed at the incident, others insisted that the Chinese storeowner had no right to assault the woman, even if she was a shoplifter.

An eyewitness who was in the store at the time told Stabroek News that the women were caught red-handed stealing items from the store and when accosted by the storeowner became very defensive. When the storeowner raised an alarm, the women became angry, the eyewitness said.

In less than an hour the store reopened and it was business as usual.

Ms. Bismatie – just to be clear… are you referring to the actions of the shoplifters or the store owners?

    • Reddy BARBADOS says:

SN, now that you refer to the race of the store owner and a male in this so called story, you will have to be consistent and name the race of all the people in other items.
Wha wrang wid you ? ABC of journalistic professional practices: never cite race of person unless absolutely necessary. In this case it was not necessary but you put it in to make the item more senationalist to pander to National Inquirer types. These people may have been Chinese citizens, even born in the country –are they any different than other Guyanese ? (No)

That’s why people are afraid to open business in Guyana, instead they are running away from the country, the crime rate is terrible and with all the advice and recommendations this government has recieved from both foreign and local security experts, they are still not making changes in the armed forces.

    • dubaiciti UNITED STATES says:

True, these thieves are a menace to the hardworking people who are trying to earn an honest living. They don’t only steal, they are damned presumptious about it and therein lies the problem. No wonder so many are going out of business because the insurance to cover these shoplifters is not worth the headache facing store owners today. Believe me, I see it all the time, and that is why every single item needs a barcode that would trigger the alarm when it goes out the door if not cashed at the register. But that is an expensive process, of course it cost money because it eventually saves the shopowners money.

  5. billp CANADA says:

What utter nonsense RDMAN. You need the armed forces to combat shop lifting? This is a common problem stores and buisnesses faces throughout the world, not only in Guyana.

    • RDMAN UNITED STATES says:

Thats why your name is Billp and not Dillip, they know why they give you that name, because you fail to see the big picture.Shoplifting is all over the world but in Guyana it is more blatant and everyday business people are robbed, its a matter for the police also, you are only fooling yourself because you are living in peace and tranquility in Canada.I want you to be in the shoes of the ordinary Guyanese, stop your nonsense.

  6. Romaladie CANADA says:

I think that it call for a lot of guts to do what the Chinese did, but we have to learn something from these Chinese women if we are to fight crime in Guyana , the need to master the Chinese martial arts, especially our youth and young women , must be able to protect themselves, and we are luckly that the Chinese are not running from Guyana but have increased and are all over Guyana and their expertise should be fully utilised by your people .Crime fighting is not only the responsibility of the police but every citizen, get yourselves into classes and be fit and healthy.

    • MXQBH (1 blood donation can save 3 lives) GUYANA says:

Don’t let the Bruce Lee, Jackie Chang & Jet Li movies fool you, most Chinese don’t know martial arts. It’s just Chinnywood.

  7. dubaiciti UNITED STATES says:

This is such a shame; business people are fed up with these thieves who are obviously presumptious. If you cannot afford to pay for an item, or don’t want to pay for it, you should not be going into the store. The chinese people are a resourceful lot, and lord knows they work hard; all over the world they have a store of some kind. To have their items stolen right in fron of them is just wrong, and obviously nothing can be done about it. This has been going on for years, the only difference is that it is more rampant today.

  8. ZERO-TOLERANCE CANADA says:

Well at least no lives were lost over this, shame on the shoplifters who think they can just walk into peoples store and steal whatever they feel like , they mess with the wrong people and got some “hi-yaaaaaaa ka-pow karate” from the chinese and some folks thinks the chinese wrong for asaulting the culprits.
“nex a’ time you tink a’ twice befoe’you thief from chiney store”!

    • Bung Nabel UNITED STATES says:

So what are we tolerating here?

    • Ginger56 (There's No Place Like Home) UNITED STATES says:

A society that is encouraging one to steal!

  9. La Dorada UNITED STATES says:

These bare-faced thieves are the reason those storeowners treat customers like potential shoplifters. In a particular water street store every movable object is behind a cage or bolted down but you still have to go through a lot of back-and-forth to finally be able to leave the store with your purchase.

  10. ThatGuyaneseGyallShanon UNITED STATES says:
