A Corentyne businesswoman is the latest victim of a spate of recent bandit attacks in Berbice.
Two men, armed with handguns, entered the Wellington Park, Corentyne home of 48-year-old businesswoman Melena Nathoo at about 6:45 pm on Saturday, police said. Nathoo and her mother, Dhanmattie Nathoo, 69, were home at the time and they were robbed of over $1.3M.
Investigations revealed that the two women were at home when the armed men entered through an open doorway and held them at gunpoint. They then took away a total of $1.3M, US$400, a lap top computer and four cell phones and escaped, a police statement said.

The escalation of crime is one of the tell-tale signs of a government in moral and constitutional decay.
And in the PNC era what did these crimes represent? And where was your voice?
Dis bandit thing start back in your PNC days. Stop blaming everything on the government.
“tra la la laaaaaaa…..”l
A short, to the point story .Thankfully, SN has avoided bringing in the usual speculation of “relatives” and “source”to pad the item for the tillitation of National Inquitrere types.
A point I want to raise though is why the ethnic orgin was not explicitly stated as with the story yesterday with the “Chinese” propreietor allegely attacking an alleged shop lifter.
SN, you have to be consistent. If you can insult Guyanese of Chinese descent by the unnecessary reference to their ethnic origin The race has nothing to do with the story. This is ABC of journalistic proessional parctices. Bringing in it gives the impression that Guyanese-Chinese are outsiders.
. So be consistenet, if you describe the race of Chinese-Guyanese then you have to do it for every story….
Dear Bis…
Get a Life!!!!
In the PNC era you don’t do crime on your self
Crime continues unabated in this country. There is a spike of such activity on the Essequibo Coast too, but no one is paying attention.
i am so amazed when people get rob these days the amount mention…i wonder if is true or just because they get rob they come up with these figures..i am not saying people are not being rob is the amount..that always bothered me..
I think the money is reported in Guyana dollars, NOT the US equivalent. $1 US equals $204 Guyana.
LOL..it sure does, why have so much money at home too.
One thing I know for sure, Guyanese love to talk big!
Help Me With This !?!? Are we supposed to pay Taxes on Monies we keep Home????
Like Large Amount??
Tis the season to be jolly, and the bandits are ready for the season, hope they get caught soon.
Arn’t you glad that the bandits are jolly. Its “business as usual” eh!
More defenceless citizens become prey to these marauding criminals. I am sure most of these blights are either from the area or supplied information by people who know the victims. I am happy that the women came out of that traumatic ordeal with their lives.
This is propably the only trade for the lazy in Guyana.
-please put an emergency number on billboard for quick reaction response.
-decentralised quick reaction groups
-people have phones, they need to use them…call’s ID is very important.
-cammander needs to deploy holiday…assignment group in this region
-make frantic effort to root out these criminals, look for clue, search for them contiously….do not stop
-I hate crime ,criminals.
Mr. Burke, relative to item 6 in your above letter, I join you in taking further look at the behaviour of Dr. Chand.
I have reason to believe Dr. Chand’s explanation in the aforesaid item 6 gave cause to believe something went terribly wrong at Vreed-en-Hoop police station. In my opinion, I find that Dr. Chand had admitted poor judgement in his examination of the victim, whose rights have been allegedly infringed.
Whilst he never mentioned he interviewed the victim, he may have received pertinent information about him from police.
Also, what may be baffling our readers is he never mentioned what infromation he had received from the police with regards to injuries sustained by the victim.
Lets put to our readers the below questions:
Did Dr. Chand knew about the victim’s injuries before he got to the police station?
Was Dr. Chand ever present at Vreed-en-Hoop police station to examine the victim?
We all know by Dr. Chand’s own statement that he cannot be identified by the victim because the victim’s head was covered with a bag. Now we put another question to our readers. Did Dr. Chand really examine the victim, or was he told about the injuries the victim received and wrote a prescription?
Occurrence Book enteries on the date in question MUST show the movements of the victim. Furthermore, it must show the reason a bag was placed on the victim’s head. If there are no such entries in the Occurrence Book, then as we still say, “more heads gon roll.”
Did Dr. Chand grew tired of gross police misconduct and exposed antisocial behaviour of people in authority even though it may have negative impact on his career?
You are so anxious to write that your piece is posted against the wrong article.
How long should this go unchecked? Come on officers, I know you can’t be everywhere at the same time, but execute some kind of strategy that would make these deviants think twice before committing these acts.
Give the people weapons to defend themselves. This will continue when the bandits know that they have the edge. These bandits were not from out of the area. Bring back the cat o’ nine.
Colt 45:
I’ve seen you make this suggestion b/4 but here is the thing; If they give back the people their guns which were taken away from them by Burnham, then that would be the end of the PPP.
Go figure it out!!!
It would also be the end of the PNC;
Guyana would be a new country! the country of your ancestors, where people respected one another.
Many are standing by to holler for murder if the cat o’ nine should take effect.
Well it gonna b cow boy town. Yeah give dem guns. As soon as a fly harm dem deh gonna wanna shoot the fly.
