The Alliance for Change (AFC) has again taken its dissatisfaction with government to the international stage with a full-page advertisement in today’s edition of the Trinidad Express.

The advertisement, an “updated report card on the Government of Guyana”, is directed at Commonwealth Heads of Government and Delegations. According to the AFC, “the signs are there, Guyana’s democracy is failing.”

The first in a list of eight complaints in the advertisement is the failed promise President Bharrat Jagdeo had made during the Summit of the Americas in Trinidad and Tobago in April that freedom of information legislation would be introduced in Guyana in two months. The AFC added that it is shameful that after some 17 years of PPP rule in Guyana, the monopoly control of radio by that government still continues.

The opposition party said that even after revelations were made in a US court implicating a government minister of complicity in killings by a “phantom” force, President Jagdeo refuses to accept a public call for an independent investigation. Similarly, it said that no inquiry has been held into the numerous killings by the security forces or allegations of government’s links to narcotic gangs.

Parliamentary reform measures recommended by the Commonwealth and which gained parliamentary approval are not being implemented in Guyana, the advertisement said. Its fifth complaint is that it has been eight years since the Guyana constitution was amended to introduce a Public Procurement Commission to ensure transparency and accountability of government spending, but this commission is yet to be established.

The political party said also that a desperately needed Security Sector Reform Programme, funded by the British Government, has been abandoned leaving the Guyanese people in peril, while the Head of State announced the presence of terrorists engaging the government in Guyana at a November, 2009 press conference.

The AFC concluded by stating that recent revelations of the badly burnt and tortured body of a 15-year-old boy held in police custody not only shocked the Guyanese public but also revealed that “torture has become a standard interrogation tool in Guyana”.

An AFC ad had appeared in the same publication during the April Summit of the Americas.

  1. why is the AFC supporting Jagdeo with his low carbon development strategy again?
these guys need to make up their minds if they are going to work to change what’s wrong in Guyana or jump in and out of bed with king Jag

    • devdub JAPAN says:

I still think that the AFC support of the LCDS is showing that they recognize the good aspects of the Government. Does that mean that they shouldnt speak up when things are wrong? I dont think so. Accept the good and shun the wrong. Way to go!

    • SAQ UNITED STATES says:

AFC is an opportunistic party. We do not need to have our dirty linen washed in front of the whole world. Shame on AFC.Do the think this will affect how Guyanese vote in the next elections more than ever it will cause us to vote for the only true party the PPP.

    • Bismattie Ramsawak [The PPP is stripping away citizens rights] 174.113.121.253 not found says:

I don’t really think much of the AFC but I have to admit that this was brilliant out of the box thinking.

      I absolutely love it!

    • gap1 UNITED STATES says:

It is sad that the stuggle for democracy in Guyana goes on 17 years after democracy was supposedly returned to Guyana.

Jagdeo has taken an okay party and has given it as bad a politically foul stench as the PNC.

I commend the AFC for taking seriously, their role as an opposition party of our Guyana. Keep it up. Great move!

Next, the US and the rest of the world. They should now seek donations (funding) to take out an ad in the New York’s times.

    • Odinga Perreira CANADA says:

Saq! It would seem that you are wearing a blindfold and have on ear plugs – or you’ve been brainwashed(who by? We’ll leave that to be decided later). Sad that you speak from a far as we all do. Sounds like you need to go back and live the Guyana dream, you’ve been away too long.

      SSDD

    • SAQ UNITED STATES says:

      Odinga,

For your information I was back in Guyana two months ago and was very impressed about the development under the PPP compared to what was under the PNC. i would suggest you are the one who need to remove the blindfold and earplugs from your conscience.

Anyway my point is that AFC has no hope ever ruling Guyana and is just trying to embarrass the Govt. How pathetic.

    • Odinga Perreira CANADA says:

Saq, looks can be decieving! Its not about going back on holiday and seeing all the “good” things that have been done.

I left Guyana recently, so have been living there all my life up until about a year ago. Going back on holiday does not make you see how people have or are living in Guyana. You have to live there to understand Guyana, a holiday will not open your eyes to all the undercurrents, political or other.

There is so much you did not “see” or “hear”!

Like I said you have to go back to Guyana and live to understand the place – and trust me you don’t.

      SSDD

    • briantee ANTIGUA AND BARBUDA says:

SAQ, I guess that development is in the eyes of the beholder, because I certanly don’t see it.

    • Reddy BARBADOS says:

yaaawn…bringing down Guyana good name again..they gon get a good kick at the next election…

    • yarrow UNITED STATES says:

SAQ……I don’t know why you living in America. When you return to Guyana did you investigate the underworld drug operation in Guyana, and its ability to distroy the Caribbean Intigration Movement, and Guyana as whole.

SAQ…..the grass may look green on the other side but I do know how old you are but you need to be schooled about the PPP. SAQ you could of stayed and join hand with the PPP.

The bitter pass that live with some of you is responsible the state of Guyana. America is used as a launching pad to keep some people in the backward state. If you want to condem…..ask the large number who have return from Guyana who went home to serve under the PPP ask them about the PPP. Don’t chastise the AFC, Guyana will never see another unity like this again.

SAQ…..the development taking place the Guyanese People have to pay back that money, big and small, and those to come.

Look who come into do thr building in Guyana, look where the development dollars going, look at the drug dealer investment and hurt they causing the Guyanese community.

When ever you talk about PPP development in Guyana, please do not do not leave of convicted fellon Roger Khan. In the history of Guyana politics, Guyana has never been like this before.

  2. I applaud the afc for what they are doing in highlighting the attrocities in guyana, but they need to do more when they are in guyana, they need to protest more in guyana, let the people know that you exist, if not they like the pnc will never win any election in guyana.

    • BACHAN SINGH UNITED STATES says:

The AFC have seats in GUyana parliament right. That’s the forum to highlight and fight for these issues. If they can’t do that then they have failed. This is the problem with all the oppositon in Guyana. They cannot take up issues at the correct forum to have positive change. They are good at demonising Guyana while they fatten themselves off it’s blood sweat and tears.
Hence the question, If it’s so bad in Guyana, home come the opposition parties and their MPs are becoming more AAFLUENT.

    • Bismattie Ramsawak [The PPP is stripping away citizens rights] 174.113.121.253 not found says:

The PPP uses the absolute power of the presidency to push through all of their agendas without bi-partisan approval from opposition parties.

This practice runs counter to the framers of a democracy. It also renders the opposition parties powerless and negates the true democratic intent of parliamentary consensus debates.

The opposition is therefore forced to find alternative ways to get their messages across.

    • Najbar SAINT KITTS AND NEVIS says:

BACHAN SINGH you speak like a blinded PPP supporter who as usual prefer to express narrow minded thought….. no wonder Guyana is in the same mess it’s in. If you understand international protocol your comments would have been different.

That’s what C.Jagan did to allow Democracy to return to the polls in Guyana have you forgotten?

  3. Satish UNITED KINGDOM says:

    OH HOW PATRIOTIC!!!

I DID NOT KNOW THERE WAS A KFC FRANCHISE IN TRINIDAD!

THE TRINIS MUST BE LICKING THEIR FINGERS!

    • EX GDF OFFICER TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO says:

Patriotic meh nennen. The ills of Guyana will not be cured by people remaining quiet. We have to shout to the high heavens and let the whole world know what is going on. That is what was done during the rule of the PNC and change came as a result. Now that Jagdeo is well on his way to outdoing Burnham it is time for the shout to go up.

    • BORAPORK CANADA says:

“Patriotism” is the virtue of the vicious. “Patriotism” is the last refuge of the scoundrel. Maybe if there was another Broadcast outlet for the views of the opposition, this washing of our dirty laundry in the foreign public press wouldn’t be necessary. It seems you have forgotten Guyanese appearing on Oprah Winfrey’s show to bemoan their poverty at the hands of Burnham’s tyranny. Vishnu Bisram recent boasting about getting Kennedy and Ron Brown to intercede on behalf of the P.P.P. Jimmy Carter should come to see what his handiwork has delivered as well as the corruption and greed that run rampant in this once peaceful nation.

    • Griot GUYANA says:

Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel – Samuel Johnson

    • Razzmatazz UNITED STATES says:

Sorry Ex GDF.. you are wrong about the same being done during PNC rule. maybe you meant during the last 2 years of Hoyte rule. Truth is many of the Caribbean rulers and governing parties turned a blind eye to what Burnham and the PNC was doing to Guyana and sadly a lot of that was because of race. I know that it’s old news and many people don’t want to hear it. But, admitting to the truth will set you free.

BTW, I don’t have a problem with AFC’s protests in or out of Guyana,as long as they stick to the facts.

    • Satish UNITED KINGDOM says:

Please DO NOT EVER AGAIN ACCUSE ME OF WATCHING OPRA, BORAPORK!

And yes, I would welcome the Hon Mr Jimmy Carter to visit back in Guyana to see the new FREEDOMS AND PROGRESS which have now been gifted to the ordinary Guyanese.
If YOU do not like it, then THAT is YOUR problem.

    • gap1 UNITED STATES says:

I can see the little PPPites getting yappy on the internet. Wonder why they are getting this desperate and this angry and trying to nip at so many akles.

Is the ship beginning to fall apart from the bottom? If the little PPPites are so right, then why are they all yelling and foaming at the mouths all over the blogosphere?

Let me guess, you people believed that Jagdeo could control the world like he controls Guyana. Nope, I’m afraid he’s not God after all.

AFC, next please launch the dossier on the net in a format that we site owners/webmasters could attach to our repective sites. As we’re all now in the business of continuing the struggle for democracy in Guyana, you are not alone. You have company so be sure that the PPPites on the blogosphere will be yelling agrily, foaming at the mouths and yapping at ankles even more!

I personally will start by telling the world of what they did to the 15 year old boy, and then I would like to work backwards to every human rights abuse this elected dictatorship has committed.

    • briantee ANTIGUA AND BARBUDA says:

Satish I think its time for bloggers to stop reading your blogs for we all know that whatever happens you will continue to spew out your garbage in the name of party loyalty.

  4. Reddy BARBADOS says:

Hmmmm. This non story at top of list.
These no hopers once again trying (I say trying) to tarnish the good name of Guyana, including its investment climate. A pity, because one would have thought an opposition party would try and be moe patriotic, rather than trying to undermine the livilehood and progress and evlopment of al the Guyanese people, and so win more votes a next election.

    • Slug BARBADOS says:

Reddy: Are you such a blind political sycophant that you could not even challenge the veracity of the AFC’s complaints..not even one…please refute the allegations made…give us the government’s side to the issues highlighted…the world is neither blind nor stupid..much more needs to be done to showcase the ineptitude which permeates the current government as well as the daily challenges facing Guyanese in Guyana…not the ones like yourself who have escaped to Barbados living in peace and luxury.

    • Brandon Samaroo (Jagdoe has used Burnham's constitution more than Burnham) CANADA says:

No hopers? we have been hoping for more than 17 years….. don’t celebrate too hard begging isn’t and shouldn’t be recognized as success.

    • Soldier (Opposition Forces at Work) UNITED STATES says:

This is why no one heeds them Reddy…The entire world know it is a Power Struggle with the oppositions in Guyana and the two (PNC & AFC) are fighting for second place in Guyana…They are looking very stupid to the outside world daily…

    • Reddy BARBADOS says:

yes, enoying the good life in Barbados-shortly will go to the beach for a swim and relax with a good beer and lunch, knowing that my country is in good hands with this caring government improving life for all the Guyanese people and, yes, lamenting the stupidity of opposition forces but understanding dem trying to hang on their dwindling support base….Peace

    • The AFC should also run adds in Barbados and Antigua , too . Reddy is the greatest sycophant the PPP have in Barbados . He refers to some bloggers as “no hopers” and speaks of people trying to tarnish the “good name” of Guyana . Guyana is a comfort zone for criminals of all types . Reddy wants to forget the a 15 year old minor was TORTURED while in police custody in Guyana , pictures of the boy’s badly burnt penis and surrounding area is being circulated on the internet . There are guyanese “business men” in prison in Barbados for trifficking and importing cocaine . Roger Khan , who is now spending 15 years in a USA prison is a guyanese “business man” who imported and exported cocaine when he was living in Guyana . Guyanese are fleeing from Guyana because living in their homeland is hopeless under the inept PPP govt . Under the “caring govt” guyanese are murdered/robbed daily . The carnage on the streets and highways continue , unabated . Reddy is condenming articles in the Stabroek News eventhough , many of these articles are reproduced in the Barbados Nation news-paper and he don’t criticise the Nation . The Stabroek News is doing the right thing by printing the truth about what is taking place in Guyana .
“The TRUTH is a mighty sword” .

  5. RDMAN UNITED STATES says:

Embarass mr.Jagdoe all over he travels,do the same in New York, this government doesn’t care for dialogue, street protest is all they understand.

    • Caesar Agustus UNITED STATES says:

This is stupidity that is beyond categorization. Why take out an ad in Trinidad to express yourself on Guyana? This is amateurism.

    • Stokes UNITED STATES says:

Little Ceasar, based on what the AFC presented, are the facts in dispute? While you might disagree with the method they’ve chosen to ventilate the problems that the Jagdeo administration has inflicted on Guyana, what makes you the authority to pronounce on what is stupid and what isn’t?

    • gap1 UNITED STATES says:

Oh leaves little Ceasar alone. Why do you want to hurt his head with such an intelligent and reasonable question.

Judge for yourself. Look at the question he asked…;)

    • Caesar Agustus UNITED STATES says:

Reader AFC Stokes. Do not attack me. Attack the issue. Learn to respond correctly. The subjectivness is not whose authority. It is an ad placed practically in the Carinbbean sea about Guyana. To give an idea where they and you stand.

    • briantee ANTIGUA AND BARBUDA says:

Ceasar do you think they could run that add in the Chronicle??

    • Caesar Agustus UNITED STATES says:

  8. ChangeBoy UNITED STATES says:

This is great. the AFC has some heavy hitters that shows they are preparing for Govt. Trotman/Ramsaroop ticket with support by Ramjattan, GAP/ROAR, Holder, etc and combination with some Civil Society leaders can help the Guyanese people race them into power. CB

    • L.Leroy CANADA says:

    • Rudolf CANADA says:

      All da King’s orsses!

PNC, AFC, same installation instructions, expires in year 1990.

    • Randolph Harte UNITED KINGDOM says:

If the government refuse to accept the Queen’s money to beef up security in Guyana, why should the Queen visit Guyana, especially when, as the AFC ad says, there are terrorists engaging the government in Guyana?

  10. yasuman71 UNITED STATES says:

The AFC can take out full-page ads in the New York Times, the London Times, the Globe and Mail, the Kilimanjaro Gazette—who cares? If the AFC has money to splurge, let them splurge! What matters most is what the voters within Guyana think about the AFC. Come 2011 we shall see.

    • MXQBH GUYANA says:

Hope you are not one of the visiting voters who come, vote and flee.

    • Yasuman71,
You and I enjoying real democracy under the stars and stripes, our brothers and sisters DESERVED the same enjoyment, if that is what it takes to get the word out, so be it my brother.

    • Davo 190.213.71.249 not found says:

      Pouderoyen and MXQBH.
Don’t worry with our boy bensuma he likes the status quo, and maintains it with his remittances, votes (I mean as much as he can afford), contributions to Fhouse, any means to ensure that a certain set of perceived supporters of the former government suffer, to time indefinite if possible.
Unfortunately he represents the vast majority of our “patriots”. GHK mentioned this in his letter “about returning and enjoying first class citizenship in Guyana”. Guess he didn’t want to come outright and identify the atrocities that some of my countrymen are experiencing throughout the world, recently two were executed here (in T&T) for standing up for their rights, and I expect no justice.
It is sad when you think that revenge at the expense of an entire nation, is a valid stance in the 21st century (just like your crazy mentor in Afghanistan).
It has long been established that the main impediment to progress in my country is the PPP government, and it’s identical twin the PNC.
I am not always in agreement with the AFC, but this action is laudable, indicating at least there remains some grey matter within the opposition.
BTW the identity Pouderoyen is a good touch, really miss my village.

    • watcher CANADA says:

You might be better off trying to counter the statements the AFC has made.Instead all we get is a tail between the legs and a resort to the refuge of racial voting patterns

    • Brandon Samaroo (Jagdoe has used Burnham's constitution more than Burnham) CANADA says:

AFC going to continue to expose the corrupt PPP every change we get Yasu bear and believe me we will start to rachet up the protests outside of GY.

We will not leave Jagdoe and his crew to continue to go all over the world and pretend that they are the victims in GY.

    • Raj of Richmond Hill UNITED STATES says:

If you did not understand Yasuman’s boast, let me explain it.
He is boasting about the racial voting system in the country -and the fact that the PPP will win, simply because Indians make up 50 percent of the population.

Yasuman is celebrating the existence of ethnic parties and the population voting their ethnic loyalties.

Yasuman cares less about genuine democracy and more about Indian triumphalism.

    • briantee ANTIGUA AND BARBUDA says:

Raj thats exactly what Yasuman, and coolieman, soldier, evileyes and satish are saying and counting on.

    • Light CANADA says:

Winning an election, is not equal to accountable, transparent, efficient and successful governance; the PPP has shown this for the 17 years it has been in office. It has bred more divisiveness and acrimony in the society!

This is also shown, by the ongoing power struggles and framentation within the leadership of the PPP, particularly, pertaining to the presidential canidadicy for the 2011 elections – should Mr. Ramkarran or Mr. Nagamootoo be excluded.

The PPP has been in office, largely, as a result of the ‘racial insecurity and fear’ in the society – and the ethnic pattern of voting based on that fear. This, in itself breeds divisions in the society and significantly undermine effective governance.

The above is not something to brag about!

    • yarrow UNITED STATES says:

I hope you Yasuman listen to President Obama’s presentation last night on corrup government around the world, and torture. It seems as thugh he was talking to Guyana with Ms. Clinton in front.

You can join us or go the other way…..the pressure is on and we (the AFC) will do everything to return Guyana to Guyanese and to work with America for a Secure Western Front.

You Yasuman and the PPP can take you Socialist idea and experiment to the East where your President continue to visit with his begging Cup…leave the AFC alone you either join us or ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ.
